Cont: Musk buys Twitter II

that's all under the assumption that only geniuses can make huge amounts of money.

Which post is this replying to?

Don't think any in particular, and it is an assumption that underlies a lot of discourse about Musk and society in general. There is an underlying attitude that he must be a genius because he's "the richest man in the world", the reasoning is that he became that by dint of his own "unique" intellect, his genius, so when someone criticises him the retort is "if you know so much why aren't you the richest man in the world?"

And of course this belief supports and is supported by the belief that if you're poor you deserve it for not working harder or inventing a machine to extract static electricity from the air.

I will miss Twitter in some ways, because it more than any other piece of media has done more to disabuse the public of the idea that the rich are somehow especially competent or otherwise special. If you're a rich person cultivating an air of hyper competency or whatever, it's probably best to not use social media and let the public get direct access to your dumb ideas.

Latest Musk shenanigans:

If you click on a link from Twittx to some of its rival sites, you will be given five seconds to think about why you shouldn't have done it.

Amusing that Musk probably thinks this will hurt these huge intuitions, but in reality making Twitter more annoying to use will probably just encourage less use. Being an aggregator of big news sites and whatever is a huge part of Twitter's utility and attraction.

Cutting off one's nose to spite one's face

more free speech absolutist hypocrisy. but i think we're way past pretending that was ever true

haven't personally verified, but I've seen the claim that trying to send a BlueSky invite code via Twitter DM results in your account being locked until you pass a CAPTCHA test.

You can practically smell the flop sweat.

Tweetdeck has officially been moved to premium-only, so you have to pay to use it now.

For those that don't know, it was a much more robust desktop UI, which was really helpful when it came to things like managing multiple accounts (a common practice for brands) and keeping multiple tabs up on screen tracking things like searches and replies.

I used to say that eventually, Musk will realize why it's a bad idea to make the user experience a hassle for your content creators. I formally retract that claim. He will never understand.

At least two brands have said they will suspend advertising on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, after their ads and those of other companies were run on an account promoting fascism. The issue came less than a week after X CEO Linda Yaccarino publicly affirmed the company’s commitment to brand safety for advertisers.

The irreconcilable conflict between Musk pandering to extreme right wing freaks on Twitter and having any chance of making the site attractive to advertisers.

The highlighted is probably going to be evergreen and valid reply to so many subsequent posts

Thank you Elon for making this sacrifice. Many of us wanted to do it but we didn't have the money to throw away. That's one down. Now, do you have enough left to buy Facebook? How about Fox News?

Nah, pushing right wing conspiracy theories and being a safe space for white supremacists would likely win Fox News audience share back from the likes of OANN. :(

Since the blue ticks started getting a share of any ad revenue generated on threads they start, the level of clickbaiting spam has gone through the roof.
It all seems to be right wing and crypto trash.

Musk didn't buy twitter to destroy it, he bought it to be the first company of his to make a profit from its operations. That's how good of a business man he is.

Tesla makes an operational profit in most quarters. Of course, Musk stole that company and he doesn't own more than about 14% of it.

Tesla only started making money after Musk started losing interest in it. And it's still highly dependent on corporate welfare, eg the Las Vegas loop, for its profits.
