And serve no purpose: cultists still get mad and Trump is barely inconvenienced.
 
There is probably a way for Trump to postpone his prison term whilst in office, should he get re-elected.

This is all new. But there is no mechanism or anything written down that says a felon can postpone his sentence to serve an elected term.
 
An "end" to all of this where Trump gets off Scott-free and the only consensus reached is "Okay but the NEXT President who attempts a violent coup and tries to steal an election, that guy he's in real trouble" is scarily plausible.

The other problem with "unprecedented territory" is that it's legally murky if you can apply any decisions made to the current situation so often.
 
Prison is not a bar to running for federal office, either. In 1798, Rep. Matthew Lyon ran for Congress from prison and won. He assumed his seat in Congress after serving four months in prison for “libeling” President John Adams. An effort was made to expel Lyon from the House, but it failed.

It may not be a bar to run for office, but it would be difficult serve from inside a prison cell.

It looks like a logistical nightmare to me, four courts and 81 felonies.
That's more than his age, mental and physical.

Better for the Republicans to just find someone else.
None of the others running for the nomination have the popularity.

Maybe, they should find some way to steal RFK away from Democrats,
and run him instead, despite his views on abortion.

Trump won't go to jail or to prison. He's a security nightmare. He will be held at a secure house arrest of some sort, without access to his smartphone or social media, perhaps his TV will be prohibited as well.

His Secret Service will be able to do their duties without risk to life or limb, and Trump will be unable to communicate with his rabid base.

Trump isn't president anymore. He is an EX president, so he is no one's boss except for the slobs that clean Mar-a-Lago.

Trump won't be confined to any home HE owns. The guilty verdict may cause the banks to grab the collateral for all his loans, and I don't think any of Trump's properties have been protected. He will be confined at a place provided by the government, possibly at a military base. It will be a private prison for one very high profile prisoner.

He's actually not. Prisons are made to be secure. If a prison needs to make a few accommodations for a Secret Service detail, they can do that.

I don't think there is any mechanism for the SC to pardon a person or cancel their prison term unless they claim that the trial was faulty.
In that case, Trump could be tried again.
