Go woke, go broke

I don't think a product has to be marketed as 'woke' to be, or to be perceived as, 'woke'.

If Baldur's Gate has produced outrage from the anti-woke crowd (and if the description of it above is accurate I can see why it would), and if its sales have been unaffected by that outrage, it's an example of a product which contradicts the title of this thread.

If there is no special marketing (like say "There are ten gay/lesbian romances!" or "50% of NPCs are colored!"), then it is no different from other games and thus fails the tile of thread at first test. It didn't "go woke". There's nothing to distinguish it from rest...

Its content is what distinguishes it. Marketing isn't the only way for that content to become known. I've seen no marketing for this game whatsoever yet I was already aware of its existence and, thanks to this thread, I became aware of its content.

A poll among movie goers in those states would be interesting:
Are they the 'silent (Dem) minority' in those states?
Are they Republicans who go to get triggered?
Or are they Republicans who heard it's a good movie and just don't give a damn if it's woke or not?

I disagree, like Pixel42 says it's the content that will get something labelled as "woke" or not. Now sometimes the marketing will have got the product labelled as "woke" as well as the content but you don't need "woke" marketing for a product to be deemed "woke".

I wouldn't conflate Conservative pundits and outrage mongers with the general Conservative population. These people have a very aggressive news cycle, they constantly need new content to fill the airtime, and often that means grasping at straws.

With the rare exception of Bud Light, these "go woke, go broke" freakouts seem to have very little traction outside the right wing tabloid world and the small fraction of terminally online weirdos.

Just because Ben Shapiro is declaring something woke trash doesn't mean even his own audience or especially conservatives more broadly feel strongly about these things. Even their own audiences are not taking these things particularly seriously.

Who are your 'usual suspects'? I've seen more than a few including the Daily Mail article titled 'BALDUR'S GATE gone WOKE?'
Pretty sure that was just a funny meme.

The same lack of traction may be noted from the terminally online weirdos on the left.

I found the same thread trying to find it. The image posted where I saw it was slightly different in that it was only the supposed 'article'. It was also posted up as evidence BG3 is 'blue hair woke' because the dicks are 'bigger on the females'. Poster would not accept that the sizes were identical but just look bigger on the smaller body models.

So, Poe strikes from both ends again.

Yeah, it's very similar. Pundits and online influencers unilaterally declaring boycotts isn't exactly how boycotts actually work. Absent an organized, unified action of a significant chunk of the relevant community, these boycotts are little more than individual virtue signaling via consumption habits. It's telling to note who is declaring these things, either right wing tabloid personalities or online video game streamers, these are people who have a fast media cycle and constantly need new content. Much of what they do is fleeting and not particularly serious, which is antithetical to the requirements of a successful boycott.

It's like the people that have been "boycotting" Nestle for god knows how many years. I don't know what that is, but it's not a boycott.

Indeed.

Also, just because an extreme view gets lots of engagement it does not mean the view is widely held. Some of it could just be a laugh react.

A lot of hype about an extreme view is even created by those who oppose it.

Everyone loves to talk about things they don't like.

For example about 80% of replies to tweets by GB News and their presenters is people mocking them.

Yep, Trump's Twitter account used to be the same.

Mind you, whereas I think Elon Musk's whole plan of attack now with X is to stop people posting mean tweets to himself. Only fanbois allowed.

It's easier to make these kinds of "go woke, go broke" spurious claims about a product or movie that has already failed, like the Ghostbusters reboot that was a flop. Much easier to play in the speculative waters of failure (as they did with Ghostbusters, the premise being that an "unwoke" version would have been more successful, an untestable hypothesis) than have to contend with cold, hard data that woke movies can indeed make money hand over fist like Barbie does with an explicitly liberal feminist message.

And remember that word engagement is at the heart of the algorithms the social media sites use, they aren't concerned what is being engaged just that they get engagement and sadly as humans we seem more prone to engage in negative ways rather than positive ways.

It is easy to see where the Woke label comes from....and it is not the creators. It is usually some snowflake in the right-wing media sphere.

I'm really curious to know where you're going to get ads like "50% more gayness!" Damn. That'd get my attention. :P
