The DeSantis gambit

Because he has made quite a few false statements about slavery and race in America, such as

Why would DeSantis have appointed someone with "a history of promoting homophobic conspiracy theories" such as Alex Jones's idea that tap water is turning people gay?

To be fair, Peri has now stated (during a CFTOD meeting) that he "never said that". But he did say that.

Peri's homophobia and absurdly ahistorical beliefs regarding slavery and race are well-documented. Perhaps that is why DeSantis appointed Peri to the CFTOD board.

DeSantis's other CFTOD appointees include a co-founder of the far right book-banning organization that calls itself Moms for Liberty, who happens to be married to the Republican Party of Florida's chairman.

If James VII & II was such a bad person to the Irish that he enslaved and murdered hundreds of thousands, then why did the Irish fight so hard for him in the civil war later renamed the "glorious" "revolution" (which was fought because James wanted to extend full civil rights to catholics, dissenters and jews).

Despite Mussolini using ending slavery as a pretext to invade Ethiopia, it wasn't actually abolished until 1942, after the Italians were run out of the country. Yes, some slaves were freed under Italian rule but they were from ethnic groups the Italians favoured under "divide and conquer" methods, and their freedom was little better than outright slavery given what the Italians were doing to the country.

Yeah, Mussolini was such a champion of freedom and human rights.
The whole Italy freed the slaves in Ethopia is a canard, ignoring that The Fasicst set up a forced labor program in Ethopia that was a de facto from of slavery.
And somebody makes it even cleater where he is comng from...and it is not a pretty place.

You have very romanticized view of James the Second.
He was trying to , while king, bring back divine right of monarchs.
And he was no great champion of Irish liberty.

Aside from this, even if it had been more true, what is its relevance? At least we're not Ethiopia? Well, ain't we special? Somewhere some link back in this thread (I think) took us to a "man of his time" argument for Christopher Columbus, in which it's pointed out that when questioned himself about his enslavement of the people he stumbled on, he remarked that he could have killed them but slavery is much better than that. This is kind of like that argument.
 
DeSantis has suspended another progressive prosecutor, this time a black woman who won her election with 67% of the vote. His office had communications with explicitly asked the Florida sheriffs to look out of 'progressive prosecutors' to go after.

He lost the last case where he fired a progressive without due cause, but the court said it couldn't reinstate the fired attorney. Fascists are lawless, and in Florida they have the support of law enforcement and the courts just allow it.

Can you imagine the outrage from Republicans if a Democrat governor told staff to 'ferret out' conservative prosecutors for suspension? They'd be screaming from the rooftops...and rightly so. I agree that this is a 'political hit job' and that DeSantis is doing this to use in his campaign as this from your link supports:

They already did plenty of that, I seem to recall, when the IRS went after Conservative tax cheats.
 
Financial woes in the De Santis camp.

DeSantis’ increasing reliance on the super PAC comes as Never Back Down faces the prospect of financial trouble of its own. Billionaire hedge fund manager Ken Griffin, who told Politico last year that he was ready to back DeSantis if he ran for president, has not met with DeSantis or donated to his campaign since its May launch, according to a person familiar with his thinking who spoke on the condition of anonymity to disclose private deliberations.

Griffin has been unsettled by DeSantis’ policies about teaching gender and sexuality in Florida schools and his ongoing fight with Disney, according to the person. The Republican megadonor is also concerned that DeSantis has been pursuing policies that undermine individual rights and liberties.
