Criminal Charges Against Trump / Trump Indicted / Hush Money Part II

A few additional bits of news:

From: Reuters
Two lawyers defending Donald Trump quit the case on Friday... The surprise announcement by Trump's lawyers John Rowley and Jim Trusty could prompt further legal complications ahead of Trump's scheduled appearance in federal court in Miami on Tuesday in the documents case.

I wonder how problematic this will be for Trump, since it seems like he has a hard time finding lawyers at it is. I also wonder about their motivation... tired of representing a client who won't listen? Realizing he will likely lose and don't want to tarnish their reputations?
Also from the article:
The Wall Street Journal at the same time reported that Trump's former military valet, Walt Nauta, had been charged alongside Trump...

Hapless pawn or was he in on it?

Probably those reasons along with him instructing them to lie, after all he is used to "his" lawyers lying and faking stuff for him i.e. Cohen.

There's also a question of what defense could they even offer to a case as overwhelmingly open and shut as this?

Good gravy, he's shedding lawyers like a dying dog sheds fleas!
I wonder if he could end up being assigned a public defender in the end?

There's also a question of what defense could they even offer to a case as overwhelmingly open and shut as this?

I dunno. Same as the last 50 bajillion times Trump openly bragged about doing something illegal, the facts were never in dispute, and he's still walking the street.

The indictment is unsealed and it's utterly mind boggling...

Including pictures of the documents sitting on a stage in the Mar a Lago ballroom.

38 counts, devastating.

Having formerly had access myself to classified documents and information, I really think this will not go well. If convicted, it's highly unlikely he will avoid a custodial sentence.

Yeah if anyone of us organized a coup against the US we'd be in prison.

If any of us openly bragged about committing sexual assault we'd bein prison.

We ain't him.

Indictment

I moved this to the trials and errors section to separate it from the general politics thread on his indictment

I'm just... the balance of evil and stupidity is just... it makes my head hurt.

He stole classified documents and showed them to a Golf guy.

It's like watching an Austin Powers movie with Dr. Evil and a James Bond movie with Ernest Bloefield at the same time.

These criminal masterminds created extensive contemperaneous evidence in the form of pictures and text messages.

I can already see the argument his supporters will make: the investigation should never have started, since Smith didn't have all this evidence before he started!

It's all the Fruit Salad of the Poisonous Punch Bowl !

These are people thoroughly accustomed to living above the law. They rarely seem to see a need to guard their statements because they just assume there will be no accountability.

Trump: See as president I could have declassified it.
Staffer: Yeah.
Trump: Now I can't, you know, but this is still a secret.

Yeah... clear recognition of wrongdoing and the utter dishonesty that he engages in to the larger public. There isn't even an absurd "I didn't know" defense possibility.

Counts 1-31 are Willful Retention of National Defense Information
32 is Conspiracy to Obstruct Justice
33 is Withholding a Document of Record
34 is Corruptly Concealing a Document of Record
35 is Concealing a Document in a Federal Investigation
36 is Scheme to Conceal
37 is False Statements and Representations

Nauta, Trump's direct accomplice here, is part of 32, 33, 34, 35, and 36.
Additionally, 38 is Nauta's False Statements and Representations.

None of these charges has a mandatory minimum imprisonment, by the look of it, so expectations be warned for this one. 4 of them have 20 year max prison time, 31 have a max of 10 years, and 3 (36-38) have 5 years max. Max fine for each is $250,000 and Max Supervised Release (parole) for each is 3 years.
