Criminal Charges Against Trump / Trump Indicted / Hush Money Part II

Speaking of jury selection, When Jordan Klepper interviews the MAGA crowd, some of them are incredibly uninformed about current events. They can't be the only folks with no awareness of what's going on beyond their [fill in the blank].

And Jimmy Kimmel interviews random people on Hollywood Blvd and they know very little about everything.

Surely there are people who simply aren't news junkies like some of us, but who also fall all along the political spectrum meaning they don't have to be MAGA folks.

The hard part would be to weed out the liars.

picking Florida as venue suggests to me that Smith wants to go fast - fighting about venue would be something Trump would love to do to delay the trial.

Yes. I wonder if future generations are going to look back at us and say "What the hell were you thinking?"

I think that that's been ongoing since Trump won the primaries before his first term, though? I'd wonder if future generations are going to look back and ask how we let such traitorous criminal elements take over so much of the government, instead?

No, he won't "flee". He will go on an extended tour of his overseas properties, taking his time at each location to ensure they are running to his satisfaction. For the next ten years. And especially those locations that don't have extradition treaties with the USA. Perhaps he might even visit his investments in Moscow. Pootie will show him around! ;)

This would be more likely. I wouldn't put it past him to actually try to "flee," though, take up residence in Russia, and pretend to be the "True President" as he acts to grift and sow chaos in the US. It would honestly be little different an act from what he's been doing. I think that too many people buy a bit too much into Trump's fake alpha male tough guy act, though. Him removing himself from the reach of those who seek to hold him accountable would be him being "smart" and "cunning" and the like. Just like how he's pretty well bragged about how great he is for getting away with all kinds of other BS.

Remember that Klepper and Kimmel are comedians, and the segments on their TV shows are specifically selected to be funny. The articulate and informed tend to end up on the cutting room floor.

D'uh. Of course I know that.

I wasn't suggesting the poorly informed were representative of the whole. My point was just that such people exist including within relevant jury pools.

Indeed. Such obviously edited segments truly cannot be treated as actually representative of the whole... even if they did happen to be representative. If all the footage was made available and that was the usual trend of things, of course, that'd be different, albeit still limited. With that said, SG's stated point doesn't depend on that. SG's point depends on the existence of the extremely uninformed and that they're not all in one place on the political spectrum. Hence, you aren't actually addressing what she said here.

I worry about Jury nullification in Florida.
I don't think its necessarily jury nullification you need to worry about (someone declared not guilty despite the evidence.)

I think the bigger risk is a hung jury... one MAGAchud holdout who votes to acquit even though the other 11 vote guilty. (Or, alternatively, someone who legitimately fears for their life if they convict and some more violent Trump supporters learn of their identity and decide to get revenge.). Under those circumstances prosecutors could decide to go to court again. (Which of course will add more delay into things.)

Of course, Stubby McBonespurs will probably take the hung jury and use it to claim innocent (ignoring of course every other juror found him guilty.)
The jury selection process is going to be quite interesting. Can they even find 12 people who can be at least somewhat objective?
Didn't they find them for the Grand Juries?
From a little googling... federal grand juries have between 16 and 23 members, and 12 must concur with an indictment. So even if one or 2 MAGAchud manage to sneak on to the jury, it wouldn't be enough to protect Trump from being charged.

I don't think fleeing to Russia is a very viable option. Whatever Putin is, he is no fool. He has enough problems on his hands right now without hosting a top level US fugitive.
... Except perhaps as a bargain asset.

Contrary to Trump's social media posts, his retention of the documents is nothing like that of other Senior officials. They did not refuse to return documents when they were discovered. They instantly cooperated. Trump in contrast refused to cooperate. Trump knew he had these documents. And then he tried to hide them.

This point is very crucial, because I have a feeling that certain voices will strain to cover it up: Trump is not charged for merely having had classified documents in his possession after his term ended, nor for merely having those documents stored unsecurely. The allegation is that he pointedly acted to hide them and prevent them from being returned to government custody once the government had made it clear they needed to be returned.

Based on the information in the public sphere, it's sounding like there might be additional charges related to showing and potentially selling off or trading some of the documents off to other countries for money/deals, as well. None of those who he's trying to distract us with have anything even remotely comparable to that on the table, even given the baseless CTs that have been floating around. We can probably expect that to change, of course, given how the right-wing disinformation machine works.

It's a completely own goal. If he had taken some good faith efforts to return the documents then this would never have happened, probably would have been a small news item about him returning documents. This is all a direct result of his arrogance and no one ever saying no to him.

If folk wish to start a new thread specifically for the classified documents crimes in the Trails section that will be OK.
