I am not sure if the supreme court will offer Trump much protection.

I am not saying people like Drunky McRapeface and the Stepford Wife have any integrity. (Far from it.) I think they are eager to install a christian theocracy in the U.S. I just don't think they are beholden to Trump personally. They may try to help him out in more... subtle... ways (such as "lets let trump tie his tax case up in appeals for years") rather than directly. (Remember, the supreme court did not intervene in his attempt to overturn the 2020 election.)

Plus, the possible contempt charge might be coming from a state-level judge. I'm not sure how much influence the supreme court would have on that, and even if they could step in, it is probably something that would take at least a little time. (After all, paperwork has to be filed, etc.) So Trump might very well spend at least a night in jail while his lawyers try to catch the ear of the supreme court.

I have no doubt that this SC will bend over backwards for Trump.
That is why State prosecutors and judges are so extremely careful not to give any reason for appeals, and why they keep their cards so close to the vest.

If they treated Trump like the criminal he is, we would already have a couple of his appeals before the Judges.

I agree - they are all transactionists. What can Trump do for them now? We know he won't be paying for their holidays, paying for their kids to attend private school and such so they have no reason to support Trump. Unless something to do with Trump aligns with what their current sponsors' want.
 
Trump is still their clearest path to a Christian Theocracy. That's harder if he's in prison.

Do not think they still don't have a vested interest in saving him.

Actually if they are smart, they will let Trump go to prison, in order to clear the way for some other right-wing theocrat to win the republican nomination.

Trump lost in 2020, and there is a pretty good chance he would lose in 2024, even with their protection. (Not to mention if they try to defend trump but fail, it might cause future democrats to, you know, actually take action to address the problems on the supreme court, something Roberts, Thomas, etc. do not want.)

Any of the other nutters would be fine with that as well, so I really don't think the SC needs him, a republican such as DeSantis is just as good for them.
 
trump's got a better shot at winning a general election than another republican doing a trump imitation.

If Trump loses the primaries to some other republican under relatively normal circumstances (or is somehow forced out of the race by other republicans), the eventual GOP nominee will likely lose because Trump will probably sabotage them, and the MAGAchud will whine "he's not Trump".

If on the other hand Trump quits the race on his own volition, the eventual republican nominee probably stands a better chance than Trump would have. The MAGAchud won't see him as a usurper so will support them, they can pretend Jan 6 never happened, etc.

That's provided Trump actually has a chance to win in 2024. I know a lot of folks are saying no one thought he'd win in 2016. But people know who he is now and he is not drawing huge crowds to his events anymore. Those SCOTUS justices will not have any use for him; they will want another Republican who has a better chance of winning. And I don't think DeSantis has a chance either. His book banning is not going over well outside of TX and FL.

If he wins the GOP nomination, they know they will lose any election with him as candidate. His political track record has been all spectacularly downhill from a populist one-off squeaker of a win in 2016, including going backwards against trend in mid-terms. The Dems, for all their sins and weaknesses, are galvanized now. The GOP is ruthless and doesn't usually back proven losers.

But their problem is Trump's base is their base too. So how to separate Trump from the base is the question. Allowing him to metaphorically drop trou and wank in public as he is doing now thus earning himself a long stretch in jail may be a valid way to make his tarnished star wane into insignificance and faded memory...

If he doesn't get the Repugnican nomination he will almost certainly decide to run as an Independent.

I would love to see that. It would be fascinating to see how the party would split while both candidates lose.

My wife suggested he'd declare himself the candidate of the Truth Party. Sounds about right to me.

Hell no, give him the eternal ignominy he deserves. Billions of years form now in a galaxy far, far away. Students of all galactic species should be given classes in how not to be such a self-eviscerating dufus.

Lesson #1: At times keep your freak’n mouth, or enunciating hole (for other species), shut!

ETA: The saddest part is if he had just held to that precept and kept the quite part a bit more quite he might have gotten closer to emulating those tyrants he so admires. Still, no fat lady singing yet, so complacency is not an option.
