Is the Universe too young?

I watched a show a few days ago where they said they are now estimating the age of the universe at 8-12 billion years. However, other astronomers have aged some of the stars at 15-17 billion years. Anybody know anything about this? What is the basis for the difference?

I think that dilemma existed a few years ago. It has now been resolved. The 8-12 billion years estimate comes from working out (distance between a distant galaxy / speed). It has been resolved by finding out that the universe expansion is accelerating.

Perhaps, that is why I was asking about it. To see if perhaps there was something new about it.

The ageing system used for the stars wasn't quite right either.
