Fox News knew they were lying about election

If you lot down there didn't have such a double-stuft basket of deplorables who demand to be lied to... There's a market for what Fox is compelled to sell. That's good ol' American capitalism. Toxic capitalism, to be sure.

To put things into perspective the entirety of the FOX Corporation only made a profit of $313mil in 2022. Thats not just the news channel. Its the broadcast station, FS1, FS2, and a few other more piddly things. FX and the movie studio were sold to Disney some years ago.

ETA: nevermind, that was just for Q4 of 2022. They netted just over 1.2 bil in 2022. So this settlement wont exactly destroy them.

I don't think that was ever a realistic possiblity.
But this will hurt, no doubt.
Fox will contiure to push right wing BS, they will be a lot more cautious about anybody or anything not in the political world.

I agree. Fox will lay off the "rigged election" nonsense.

Presumably Fox will not do this again.

If only. Their business model makes it nigh certain that similar behavior will just keep happening. Like it has for many years now.

And yeah, their statement on the settlement there pretty well makes that a case in point.

I notice, too, that they are merely "acknowledging the Court's ruling" and not admitting that FOX knew they were false.

Of course. The sheer sarcasm that underlies "the highest journalistic standards" bit is of note, too.

We shall see.

Haven't many of their hosts been playing "There were legiimate doubts and concerns about the legitimacy of the election..." card for some time now?

They will find ways to negatively portray the results of the election and continue to question the Presidency's legitimacy.

When all is said and done...Fox has come out of this a little battered, but still kicking. They don't have to acknowledge wilful deceit and they can continue to keep doing what they do, only more covertly. Also, they can claim this payout on their tax returns.

You did not expect, even if Dominion won bigtime, to force Fox off the air?

Dominion should have looked for the right to dictate Fox's apology, to be read by the main presenter of every Fox news programme at the top of each hour for the next three months.

The very least they needed to hold out for was a public apology and a prominent retraction.

Well contrary to dominant opinion, social responsibility need not be a priority for businesses. Ultimately only the bottom line matters. You can wirte this entire thing as a lost cause. There will be no repercussions for Fox and it will be business as usual.

Even on a hard hearted shareholder value viewpoint, not holding out for a full, prominent and prolonged mea culpa from Fox is bad business sense. Unless they had a very weak case, which they didn't.

Taking the short term money without thinking of the long term is never a good value proposition. However, capitalism creates the conditions where the only decisions made will be short termist.

Dominion doesn't owe us anything - they've already gone above and beyond in bringing dishonesty and contempt Fox has for its viewers to light.
But I would very much appreciate it if they used some of that money to invest in US Democracy, be it on the technological or political end.

It'd be nice if they saw to it that Smartmatic had access to ALL the evidence they had planned to use in the trial. FOX NEWS isn't done going through the legal wringer just yet.

If you want a conspiracy theory -- and who doesn't -- we already know Fox News will go after the backgrounds of people and is adept at digging up dirt, real or imagined, so...

Just throwing that out there.

the gave Smartmatic the Playbook: search post Fox program for lies about your company, then ask for discovery about messages relating to your company.
There is plenty of Judicial rulings in the Dominion case on what was deem reasonable for Dominion to ask of Fox.
Smartmatic just has to do a Serach&Replace.
