Drag Shows!!

Yeah, yeah, I'm way behind in this very long thread. A quick Google came up with a dozen places nearby with drag brunches alone. I don't go out much anymore, so I'm only familiar with one place. It's a lesbian bar. No feminists in that audience.
Yeah I know where I could go to one this weekend too, since I'm aware of such things even though I don't actually go to them. I also know where to find a decent burlesque, at which there will probably be some crossover.

I thought there weren't any male members on drag kings.

Can someone tell me the big deal about what RuPaul identifies as?

Time was I couldn't avoid drag shows

All I wanted was to get a bit drunk and get picked up and then it starts "At first I was afraid, I was petrified..."

OH, thanks, Robin! I couldn't get that song out of my head the night before last. Now, it's back.

The term "Drag King" always gives me a mental image like this:

And that's it?

Well, here's a couple more if you are really interested. From a Huffpost interview:

RuPaul said:
Drag challenges the status quo,” RuPaul told HuffPost. “It’s always challenged the matrix – the matrix being ‘choose an identity and stick with it the rest of your life because that’s how we want to sell products to you, so we’ll know who you are and can put you in a box and then sell you beer and shampoo. Well, drag says ‘I’m a shapeshifter, I do whatever the hell I want at any given time.’ And that is very, very political.”

Which in fairness doesn't even make sense. If you don't commit to an identity, they sell you easily twice as many products.

And his response to a tweet again shows his indifference to a gender identity:

RuPaul said:

@RuPaul
If the intention is love, I don’t give a ***** about pronouns. We are everything & nothing at all. XORU

You don't think it's fair to say he may not be committed to identifying as a man? Just no wiggle room in there anywhere?

I've always liked the song but playing it over and over in my head for hours while staring at the ceiling hearing two Boston terriers snoring away tends to take the shine off it.

I don't know, Stacy, maybe you need to send one of those Bostons to me to reduce the distraction....

I would be happy with another one, even one that snores (more than ours already does)

You're very committed to this idea that RuPaul doesn't identify as a man, aren't you?

Did you perhaps miss EC's post upthread, wherein she also said she doesn't really care about pronouns? By your logic then EC might not be identifying as a women either, despite her very strong and obvious feminist stance. This should tell you that you aren't reading things right, but somehow I don't think it will.

No, I'm not, and have said so slowly, clearly, and repeatedly. Please don't start.

Surprisingly, I have not memorized the thread and I don't know what post you are referring to. I doubt that EC said that she was unconcerned with being called a he, because she has very firmly called herself a female and a woman for many years here. Would you mind pointing to whichever of the posts you are specifically referring to?

Found after you came to your "conclusion".

Nice of you to put that in acare quotes, so I didn't have to point out that it was factually untrue.

And yes, I googled it, wondering if I was completely off base. So far, Stacyhs quote-mined a single obscure interview where RuPaul said he was a man, and I'm not positive that meant gender or sex, or if that was what he identified as at the time, or always. Her second more grasping at straws quote does not mention gender at all, and since gender ID is what we are talking about, that's pretty irrelevant.

I've provided three quotes in his own words where he straight up defies gender identification in plain speaking. So what's your point?

If you aren't committed to the idea, you're certainly fighting very hard to maintain your belief that it's possible for someone who isn't committed to it.

Here you go. I have noticed that it is typical for people to not see posts which contradict their claims, or to "not remember" them.

You're going to start anyway? Fine.

This whole thing got started with Stacyhs asserting that if RuPaul identified as a woman, he wouldn't be married to a gay man. I questioned this, because my understanding was consistent with the Genderbread thing upthread, that ID and orientation were separate gigs.

Hold up: are you following so far? I don't want to go on if you are lost or reconstructing arguments already.

Thanks for clarifying. So EC doesn't mind being called an "it". I have a feeling she did not mean what you think she meant. But since you are so strongly advocating for her by proxy (nice to see your support of her), perhaps she could weigh in her own self, if she's still following the thread? No, wait: maybe it could weigh in for itself? I'm sure you got its meaning spot on
