Drag Shows!!

There was a drag show at our local shopping centre today. There was a big crowd too, lots of women and lots of kids of all ages.

I guess the person in the street isn't getting the memo.

Didn't you run around telling all of the women that they should feel offended and mocked because 2 anonymous women on here have spoken in their representative rolls and deemed it so?

Today in news that is not shocking: People who like heavy metal music go to heavy metal shows. We couldn't find anyone at a heavy metal show that doesn't like heavy metal music, therefore, nobody dislikes heavy metal music.

You know what? I'm getting tired of this. I have not even remotely tried to insist that my view is the only view. I have acknowledge and accepted that some other females are okay with drag, but that I am not, and I know I'm not alone in that view.

You, on the other hand, feel justified in mocking and deriding me for having a view that you disagree with.

Bad analogy. Nobody is claiming heavy metal music mocks or demeans men. Nobody is legislating laws restricting children from listening to heavy metal music.

No, I'm not mocking and deriding you for having a view I disagree with. I'm mocking the expressed view that drag is meant to mock women, that drag is meant to "instill the notion that females are funny characters to be laughed at and mocked by males", that drag is inherently denigrating to women, etc.

You may not be alone in "that view", but the "some others" that disagree with your declarations vastly outnumber those who agree with you.

Observing that people who like X engage in X is fallacious when used to imply that people who do not like X either don't exist or are in an extreme minority.

For example... posters keep repeatedly referencing females who go to drag shows as if that means anything with respect to females who disapprove of drag. Obviously, females that do not approve of drag will not be found at drag shows.

Those happen to be the same posters who hold you up as an exemplar of a female who approves of drag, and uses your approval in order to dismiss the views of multiple other females in these various threads who do not approve as somehow being "minority" opinions.

At a minimum, it's fairly obvious confirmation bias.

How do you figure those "some others" vastly outnumber my view? How does your "some others" split on the basis of sex?

It was still a bad analogy.

I don't care about drag one way or the other; it's irrelevant to me. What is important to me is anyone, including legislatures, governors, organizations, and individuals, who tries to impose their dislike of/bias toward drag on others by passing laws like we see being done today.

Who are these other "multiple females" you speak of? I'm aware of you and one other.

I think that 60 or so years of seeing nearly every woman I know or meet either not minding or actively liking drag. Confirmation bias is when you start with a preconceived view.

Do you really think I had a preconceived view of this at 5 years old??

My view is formed from that fact that from 5 years old at least nearly time I have attended or watched any drag event was at the behest of women.

I don't live in a bubble. I've never been rich or fashionable. I have always lived in ordinary middle class or working class suburbs.

I don't get offended on behalf of other people unless it is clear that they are offended.

I'm especially not going to stand shoulder to shoulder with neo Nazis to do so.

If women in general are offended by drag they should speak up.

Was my post addressed to you???

No.

Not everything is about you. That post certainly wasn't. Get over yourself.

And I have to say it looked like a happy wholesome family day out.

I presume that this is the sort of thing the red states in the USA want to outlaw. I expect they will send the parents to re-education camps instead. Not an exaggeration from what I have read.

I honestly can only laugh.

I mean, seriously - I AM speaking up. And I'm being told, mostly by males, that I am out of my tree for being offended. I did the research, I posted papers and articles on the topic in the other thread... and they just got ignored. I can point you to many, many, many females who ARE offended, and who DO speak up.

But what I keep getting is exactly this: Oh, gee, all the females I know are okay with it. If females really have a problem they should speak up about it... as a response to females speaking up about it.

It's like putting your fingers in your ears and hollering "la la la I can't hear you!"

So here's the deal: females HAVE been speaking up. Feminists HAVE been speaking up. That there isn't perfect unanimity among females on the topic is irrelevant. At the end of the day, we HAVE been saying that this is offensive.

You just aren't listening.

You quoted my post. That seems a rather clear indication that you are responding to me.

If you don't intend to address me, then don't quote my post in your response. And definitely don't tell me to "get over myself" when I respond to you responding to me. Sheesh.

Yes you're right, I was mixing it up with the last thing I posted. Sorry.

So to give it the correct answer.

Drag shows make fun of stereotypes.

Is it OK to make fun of stereotypes?
