Merged Musk buys Twitter!/ Elon Musk puts Twitter deal on hold....

In one sense I am not surprised. Why would you allow people to post links to your competitors?

That's specious, though. Twitter is not the only for-profit social media platform but to date it is the only one that has suddenly found it necessary to blanket-prohibit general mentions of other social media sites in this manner. Clearly the balance of internet social media companies do not consider the situation to be a "competitor" dynamic in the traditional sense.

I get a loading error when trying to look at the specific webpage but some people have taken screenshots. Looks like even at the tweet level you cannot post your username on other sites even if you don’t use your URL.

I wonder how long my atheist group account will be allowed to link out to other social media sites:

As of this moment, your profile info violates the policy, as it links to a facebook page. Don't worry, I won't snitch on you.

The new policy also prohibits "3rd-party social media link aggregators such as linktr.ee, lnk.bio." In a certain sense, the homepage for your group could also be considered a "link aggregator," as it contains your social media links.

Where it gets weird is that some livestreaming platforms, such as Twitch and Youtube are incorporating bits of social media features in them. Would Twitter dare to ban people for tweeting "I'm about to go live on..."? If they get that strict with it, they're officially done.

Links to Mastodon and Mastodon profiles are hotlinks, but instead, they give you this warning.

Warning: this link may be unsafe
http://Mastodon.social

The link you are trying to access has been identified by Twitter or our partners as being potentially spammy or unsafe, in accordance with Twitter’s URL Policy. This link could fall into any of the below categories:

malicious links that could steal personal information or harm electronic devices
spammy links that mislead people or disrupt their experience
violent or misleading content that could lead to real-world harm
certain categories of content that, if posted directly on Twitter, are a violation of the Twitter

Well, I am signing up for Post and will see if the link I added to Twitter will get my real name account taken down. Definitely no loss if it does.

I reported that for doxxing Elon Musk, he takes those things very seriously.:D

Not sure I get this doxxing thing. This seems to be a common definition:

“Doxxing (also spelled doxing) is the act of revealing someone's personal information online. Doxxing is a form of online harassment that means publicly exposing someone's real name, address, job, or other identifying data.”

How exactly does this apply to a public figure? If a reporter reports “We have on good information that Kamala Harris is headed to the Souther Border Thursday, possibly with a stop a El Paso to visit a refugee center there.” Is that doxxing? Once you know Elon’s plane’s N number*, it’s trivially easy to track it on a program such as FlightAware. All the banned fellow did was aggregate readily available public information. That doesn’t seem like “doxxing” to me.

I agree it is misguided. Most of the sites listed in the ban are not direct competitors and I suspect that, for many of Twitter’s most active users, this rule decreases Twitter’s utility for them which means they’ll leave and advertising on Twitter becomes less attractive.

I stand corrected. FlightAware returns this: “This aircraft (N628TS) is not available for live public tracking due to European government data rules.”

Weird, because the prefix “N” means it’s US registered.

But I must assume there are ways around this.

The aircraft is in the European region now or recently has been, since Musk attended the World Cup final (with Jared Kushner, of all people). Once the aircraft returns to the US, perhaps that restriction will no longer apply.

You could probably access it using a VPN into the USA.

It’s interesting because it follows that ElonJet was breaking European data rules.

To poke at a really short version of what's going on - Elon's being mocked specifically because his attempted redefinition is totally unreasonable and has far reaching consequences... if it were actually upheld as the principle he tried to pretend that it was. He, himself, is immediately violating his attempted redefinition, though, to probably no one's surprise.

That the thing about right wing rules, though. It just keeps boiling down to rules to protect the ingroup, but not bind them, and rules to bind the outgroup, but not protect them. Alternately said, "We can do anything we want on whatever pretext and you can only do what we allow you to do."

My lunacy tank is full so I can't handle anymore of this thread right now.

I saw an opinion article on CNN or CBS that talked about the need for a non-profit social media platform. Is that possible/feasible? I didn't read much about it and haven't put any thought into it. I only use Youtube so I kinda don't care too much about it.

I'd kinda like to see "Eww The Toilet" and Trump work together on something just for the laughs, but I'd rather see them both just somehow disappear. What if they both disappeared from this moment on? Nobody ever heard from them again?

That doesn't say much .. he can just appoint new CEO, who will do what Elon wants anyway. Which would be IMHO the right thing to do from the beginning anyway.
Or he can turn off the Twitter completely.
