Affected means that something was influenced or changed (e.g. the lyrics affected him).

Effected means that something was brought about or facilitated (e.g. she effected the proposed changes).

https://prowritingaid.com/affected-vs-effected

In the context of your sentence, the poor are affected (stuff was done to them) rather than effected (they brought about a change themselves). Affected is passive, effected is active.

IOW

I was affected by something.

I effected something (which may have affected you).

Unless I've got it all wrong in which case I'll humbly sing the sorry song whilst doing the sorry dance. :o:o:o

A major part of the solution to leaving the EU was to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), a trading bloc on the other side of the world. Ignoring for the moment the fantasy that CPTPP could significantly mitigate the effects of Brexit, it seems that CPTPP membership may be running into headwinds.

Firstly, the UK's approach to (failing to properly implement) the Northern Ireland Protocol has demonstrated that the UK isn't to be trusted when it comes to international agreements. Now it seems that the UK's terrible trade agreement with Australia is actively a barrier to CPTPP membership.

Omnishambles barely begins to cover it.

Meanwhile we're all going to starve.....

The UK is "sleepwalking" into a food supply crisis and the government must step in to help farmers, the National Farmers Union (NFU) has warned.

It's not all down to Brexit, rising fuel and fertiliser prices are a significant factor but then again, Brexit has had an impact on those as well.

Brexit doesn't get off scot-free though:

Soaring energy costs, Brexit red tape and worker shortages were also factors, it added.

I thought Brexit was supposed to sweep away vast swathes of red tape.

Obviously those of us who were anti-Brexit pointed out that there would be more red tape post-Brexit but we were dismissed as being part of "Project Fear".

It also seems that the issues are across the board.

However, the NFU warned that food producers in other areas were now facing difficulties.

It said production of energy-intensive crops like tomatoes, cucumbers and pears was likely to hit its lowest level this year since records began in 1985.

It also said milk prices were likely to fall below the cost of production, while beef farmers were considering reducing the number of cows they breed.

Another myth spread by Brexiteers was that EU membership prevented public ownership of companies, especially utilities. This lie may have swayed the opinions of some left wingers.

It therefore comes as no surprise that a number of EU governments are doing very nicely out of their state-owned energy companies making good money out of UK consumers:

The biggest wind farm in Wales and England is at the heads of five valleys across south Wales.

Pen y Cymoedd, owned by Vattenfall, has 76 turbines that generate enough electricity for nearly 190,000 homes - one sixth of homes in Wales.

They also generate profits for the Swedish state, which owns Vattenfall, with profits going towards heating Swedish hospitals, schools and other public services.

The Welsh government is proposing to create a part-state-owned wind farm business. I wouldn't be shocked to find the Westminster government puts a stop to the proposal.

I'd ask them to explain Budweiser Budvar Brewery...

See also the several occasions where the UK's East Coast Main Line has been taken back to public ownership, made money for the exchequer, then sold back to the private sector where it failed to meet it's franchise obligations and been brought back to public ownership.

I know a farmer personally, albeit not closely(well 2 actually but only one is important here) and he voted for Brexit because it would get rid of the EU messing about with his farming.

I wonder if he regrets the decision now?

There are a lot of farmers around here, the majority of whom voted in favour of Brexit.

They're still pro-Brexit but it hasn't been done right. They wanted to keep the access to the EU markets, more subsidies and to be free of EU rules. Is that too much to ask?

The video says Billion. With a "B".
It's not clear to me whether that's a USA Billion, 10E9, or a European Billion, 10E12. But I don't suppose it matters, being a lie to start with.
10E9, pretty much no-one uses 10E12 as 'billion' any more.
Ah, bring back the 'milliard' and 'billiard'....

I think colour TV and the subsequent popularity of snooker did for billiards, and bar billiards take up the room that could be used for a fruity, which would be much more lucrative

Well it is what BlowJob and the like, including most of teh meejah, told them would happen. It's only the nasty EU punishing us that has prevented that...
