So is all UK's food grown in Ukraine and infected with COVID?

It's difficult to say, someone's dog ate all the paperwork......

Remember, as Darat has been pointing out for a while, the UK government hasn't been interested in actually governing for a very long time now, merely generating popular headlines (to give the impression that they are governing). The same applies to negative news, there's little attempt to identify (and no attempt to rectify) the underlying cause(s), merely to find an excuse that absolves the government of blame - such as Covid and or the war in Ukraine.

Of course this ignores the fact that the government's unwillingness to govern has made the challenges presented by Covid and Ukraine far more difficult for the UK to deal with than other European countries but thanks to the supine UK media, the public haven't cottoned on.

One of the messages sent by Brexit supporters was that we needed to be less dependent on the slowly growing EU and get closer to rapidly growing economies like China. This message ignored a number of uncomfortable truths:

  • That physical proximity is a major factor when it comes to trade. The notion that we'd have the same volume of trade with China half way around the world is ridiculous.
  • EU membership wasn't a barrier to increasing trade with China, other EU countries do far more trade than the UK
  • Being outside the EU reduces our "clout" when it comes to setting up trade deals

Nevertheless, the message was clear, the EU is the past, China is the future.

The government has now reversed that position:

IMO he's not wrong but if we're not going to be able to buddy up to China then where is our growth going to come from ?

More economic illiteracy from the UK government.

Increasing London's atantages as the world's premier offshore tax haven for billionaire evaders and criminal gangs.

What you and Darat are ignoring is that this government brought us Blue passports.

Company's French, their factory is in Croatia.

Thought they were printed in Poland - just an aside the point is of course the same whichever country it was.

It did ensure that we lost jobs "up North" - hey levelling up Croatia (or Poland) is a worthy goal.

To the surprise of no-one except the hardcore Brexiteers, Britain's departure from the EU has added massively to food bills, around six billion pounds in fact. Naturally the poorer are most effected.....

Of course, what we Remoaners failed to publicise was the good news from that LSE study.....

But it noted one benefit seen since Brexit was reduced competition for food producers in Britain.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-63821133

Of course that "benefit" means that UK food producers have been free to raise their prices more than they otherwise would have.

[snark]FTFY.[/snark]
effect

noun
a change which is a result or consequence of an action or other cause.
'the lethal effects of hard drugs'
synonyms: result, consequence, ......

Of course it's nothing at all to do with Brexit, it's because of Covid or Ukraine.

Just because UK prices are increasing faster than those in the EU, that the UK economy is lagging behind other developed economies and the collapse of the pound resulting from Truss and Kwarteng's economic ineptitude has exacerbated this terrible situation, there's no reason to suggest that Brexit is in any way to blame.
Ah yes, Brexiteer Blindness.

What you and Darat are ignoring is that this government brought us Blue passports.
Thankfully made in France, so they should be of decent quality.

OK, so in reality, all the UK's food is NOT grown in Ukraine. And COVID infection is non-existent "because Brexit".

So...

What's the next excuse for all the post-Brexit blues? Or are they still trying to run with that despite most women/men/other-in-the-street knowing full well what is really going on?

Or perhaps the question is better framed as: How gullible do they think the British public actually is?

Well they were gullible enough to be manipulated into voting to expel their own country from the world's largest free trade area (which most who did so still think was a good idea), and to re-elect a government which had shown itself to be utterly corrupt and incompetent three years later.

there is a war going on you know, do you really think this is the time to be discussing all this? ;)

Meanwhile, the British public have given its first verdict on Rishi Sunak's premiership.

Labour has won the City of Chester by-election, retaining the seat and delivering a defeat for Rishi Sunak in his first electoral test as PM.

Samantha Dixon has become the constituency's new MP with a 10,974 majority.

Her party secured more than 61% of the vote with a 14% swing from the Conservatives.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-63825130

By comparison to the last days of Boris Johnson and the whole of Liz Truss' time in the job the 14% swing to Labour is a ringing endorsement of Rishi Sunak.

It's quite usual for a long-serving government to lose support and the Conservatives have been the party in charge for 12 years and the last election was something of a high water mark thanks to Boris Johnson's apparent electablity and a desire from the British electorate to "get things done".

I'm not sure that the Labour Party should take too much comfort from this result and, if anything, it's good news for the Conservatives. In another couple of years the inflation crisis should be behind us (for global reasons, if anything the UK government will make things worse), Covid will be a distant memory and the Labour Party will have found some way to make themselves unelectable again.

Meanwhile Rishi Sunak is effectively giving the MP's standards body the middle finger by reappointing Suella Braverman.

The reappointment of Suella Braverman as home secretary - after she broke ministerial rules - sets "a dangerous precedent", MPs have said.

Ms Braverman was sacked from her role after leaking restricted material but given her job back just six days later, when Rishi Sunak became prime minister.

Good news that the Tories are, as usual, putting party before country.
