Merged Musk buys Twitter!/ Elon Musk puts Twitter deal on hold....

Minor point, and and I can't go ointo details without spoiling a mystery movie..something I refust to do....but I think Musk is not going to like "Glass Onion" the "Knives Out" sequel very much.

So now 'free speech' is compelling companies to pay Twitter for ads and compelling companies to keep the ap on their stores. Sounds like 'free speech' is companies favored by certain political parties being able to compel other companies to pay them. (If only there were a name for this behavior.)

Twitter wants to act like Parlor, and Apple will treat them like Parlor. Freedom.

I guess Musk is playing chicken with Apple. If they kick Twitter off their store they suddenly have millions of people they need to explain that to. That might be bad for Apple especially given that few people know about how much Apple charges app developers.

So maybe Musk is doing this to force a negotiation where they pay Apple less and/or Apple agrees to do some advertising.

That said it probably would have been a better move not to make things toxic to start with. But hey, I don’t know 13D chess.

I don’t see how Musk forces Apple to do anything. I don’t see how Apple needs Musk or Twitter at all.

Thats not the issue - the issue is that he wants to be able to charge people for subscriptions, and if you do that through an app you've downloaded via the App Store Apple takes a cut of every payment made. So they would get 30% of "his" $7.99 per month. That's what he has just learned about.

Now personally I'm actually with him, I think the Apple model (and the Google model) is legal extortion, sure charge a small handling fee for taking the payments via their payment system - you know say 5%. This is why you can't now buy a Kindle book through the Kindle app downloaded via the App or Play stores.

But he isn't going to be the one to shift Apple's stance on this - he has no leverage to use against Apple.

Also, at least as far back as 2021, a year before he made his offer to buy Twitter, Musk was tweeting about Apple's 30 percent cut. (It's actually 30 percent of first-year revenues, and 15 percent afterward, but people seem to say "30 percent" as shorthand in any event.)

FYI. As mentioned in multiple outlets.

I was wrong, it seems it's even more of a stupid thing to have done as it can't be excused by it being something he had only just learned about.

I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people who don't want to pay 30%. Your comment makes zero sense. "Since he knew about it in advance, even before his plans to purchase Twitter, he should not now take a stand against Apple's tyranny".

People should be celebrating this. As you seem to reluctantly want to do, but can't resist being critical of him.

Since I've not said anything like what you have put in quotes I suggest that you may not have understood what I did actually post.

Also I didn't know it was an either/or thing - I can be critical of different people and companies for different things even if they are also critical of something I am critical about.

Don't want to pay 30% is not much of a case to take to court.

Elon: $8 to use Twitter! If you don't want to pay it well too bad it's my platform!

Also Elon: Apple charges a fee to use their platform... Proceeds to have a tantrum about it.

This is soooo unbelievably absurd... I mean I'm having a laugh but also that someone this dumb could gain control of several huge and important companies really is kind of frightening.

Apple isn't going to change the model, otherwise that would provide a loophole for app providers to get free distribution on the Apple app store because Apple does not charge anything for hosting a free app.

Apple likely has 100 times as many fanboys (and girls) than Elon does. It'd be a minor disturbance for Apple to cut all ties with Twitter on Apples side. It'd be a calamity for Twitter.
