Merged Musk buys Twitter!/ Elon Musk puts Twitter deal on hold....

We need roughly half of our revenue to be subscription.
I wheezed at this.

If they do go sub-only, then lots of people will just leave. This will depreciate the value of advertising on the platform, which, interestingly, makes the goal more attainable, but probably not in a way that will satisfy Elon.

In light of Musk asking employees to all work in-person, a member of Twitter's legal department is hinting at a pseudo-wildcat strike in the company's slack.

NEW: A senior member of Twitter’s legal team just posted this message in Slack:“Everyone should know that our CISO, Chief Privacy Officer and Chief Compliance Officer ALL resigned last night. This news will be buried in the return-to-office drama. I believe that is intentional.”

“Twitter is a remote-first workplace, and has operated as such for years. It is a fundamental change to our employment contracts to require a 40hr a week in-office requirement. I do not, personally, believe that Twitter employees have an obligation to return to office.”

“I also remind all Tweeps (at least in the US) that we have an unlimited PTO policy. All Tweeps are able to take PTO. Perhaps today is a good day to take some rest and recharge.”
“Over the last 2 weeks, Elon has shown that he cares only about recouping the losses he’s incurring as a result of failing to get out of his binding obligation to buy Twitter. He chose to enter into the agreement! All of us are being put through this as a result of his choices”

“Elon has shown that his only priority with Twitter users is how to monetize them. I do not believe he cares about the human rights activists, the dissidents, our users in un-monetizable regions, and all the other users who have made Twitter a global town square”

So he's fired half the staff*, then trying to get a good fraction back, and has decided to implement office based work for those he's trying keep. And has decided to tell engineersbto self-certify on legal compliance that they were not previously responsible for and where they would be criminally liable for breaches.

That will end well.

*Possibly including in countries with strong employment law

I'm not sure what you mean by that. For all three of those services you have to link a bank account or debit/credit card.
Yes, that's what Musk wants for Twitter. Just like WeChat.

Unless you mean Twitter would only take a 3rd party payment system (like Google Pay)? Then they wouldn't actually have your details.
Having my credit cards in my Apple Wallet does not give Apple access to my bank account. Just that I can access my bank account via Apple's platform.

I can understand his wanting to have employees in their offices a good part of the work week, but he gong about it in the wrong way.

I can't. Twitter as a corporation functioned perfectly fine with 90% (or however much) of the work done remotely. It's all computer work. There's no benefit whatsoever with forcing people into the office.

In fact Musk isn't imposing the new requirement for any work or business related reasons; he's doing it because he's declared all of his companies no-remote-zones as a COVID-denial tantrum.

This seems like the code print-outs: He needs to see the work being done or it has no value to him.

I think that Musk is behaving more and more irrationally will drive even more businesses away from makeing deals with him,

Captain Sully is out
To my friends on Twitter, I will be taking a step back from the platform for now.

Connect with me on Facebook, LinkedIn or Instagram to stay informed and hear my latest personal and professional updates.
Man knows how to get out of a catastrophe alive

By the way, if you thought that Musk fans wouldn't stoop so low as to whine at Captain Sully - of all people - for leaving the Elon's new playground, you'd be wrong!

Exodus continues at Twitter as Elon Musk hints at possible bankruptcy

Departures of top figures handling safety, security, privacy and compliance come amid warnings from Federal Trade Commission

As Elon Musk’s ownership of Twitter entered its third week, and following mass layoffs, the billionaire laid bare a delicate financial future for the social media platform, amid an exodus of top privacy and security executives.

Yoel Roth, the head of safety and integrity who had been deputized to publicly address concerns advertisers and users had about the platform, is reportedly the latest to leave the company.

The departures began on the same day Elon Musk addressed employees for the first time, saying that “bankruptcy isn’t out of the question”, according to multiple reports.

Anecdotally: The mood on Twitter is really weird right. Seems like everyone is expecting it to be gone by Christmas or even earlier. But it's not in a depressing "where shall we go now?" sense but more like amused at the train wreck even though we're the passengers.

Or as one Twitter user put it earlier this week:
being on Twitter right now is like playing the violin on the titanic except we are also making fun of the iceberg and the iceberg is getting genuinely mad

If Twitter was publicly traded I'd strongly consider shorting them.

Umm... it'd be waaaaay too late now, I think. If you started shorting the moment that it was clear that the deal was going through, though, you might be able to turn a pretty penny.

What are the odds he REALLY means to wreck it in its current form, takes a massive tax-break from the loss, then tries to build a new one in his image from the scattered parts.

Exactly. He's already made it less attractive to work there, and he's going to be short of staff because firing 50% of the workforce then asking some to come back is not a great way to ensure loyalty.

And if it's true that the 40 hours per week will include today, that's also going to be unpopular... What is the US law about requiring work on Veterans Day or other Federal holidays?

Nothing prevents an employer from requiring employees to work on holidays, and plenty of people do work, including federal employees in essential jobs. Many businesses remain open. If there's a union contract or the employer is more enlightened than some, the employee might get premium pay or extra time off later or some other benefit. But we don't get to say fuggettaboutit.

So Musk has lost most of the remaining senior management, including his mouthpiece Roth. Advertisers are "pausing" their use of Twitter, and "Twitter Blue" is a debacle.
So, what happens next week? It's like UK politics.....

Oh my God! They'll end up making Matt Hancock the CEO at this rate.
