Merged Musk buys Twitter!/ Elon Musk puts Twitter deal on hold....

My problems with that are several.

Firstly, Musk doesn't run SpaceX, Gwynne Shotwell runs SpaceX. Musk provides some vision and helps to raise capital but the day to day running is done by her. The engineering, on the other hand, is done by talented engineers, of which Musk isn't one.

Yes, he's not an engineer, and he's not doing the engineering. But picking the right people is a skill, and you have to be smart to do it right. He did it right with SpaceX, in spades.

Secondly, we don't know how successful SpaceX really is because it's a private company. It's doing very well in the space launch market in terms of volume but we don't know how profitable each launch is.

The volume alone is incredible. That's success. Regular re-use is a success, and we know they do that too. Yeah, we don't know their margins, but I don't think we need to in order to know that SpaceX is successful.

Thirdly, there are two current projects that each may sink SpaceX: Starship and Starlink. Starship is currently going nowhere very fast. They were supposed to be sending two of them to Mars in 2022, but so far, it hasn't even flown.

Musk's timelines are bull ****. I don't believe in them, I don't care about them, and I also don't judge by them.

But compare Starship to SLS. It's ahead. And SLS was supposed to be the fast budget option because it would re-use existing engines.

The business case for Starlink was always questionable and if the numbers Musk gave to the government with respect to the Ukraine dishes are correct

Why would you expect them to be? Those are going to be an opening offer, nothing more.

I think Musk knows he made a big mistake in agreeing to buy Twitter.

That's certainly possible. But again, being smart doesn't preclude making big mistakes, and making a big mistake doesn't preclude being smart.

Yes, Vernon Unsworth's lawyers must have been pretty bad to lose that case.

Curiously, Unsworths lawyer was Lin Wood, who at that time seemed eminently capable, as he had previously won a lot of high profile cases, including one with a payout of $450M.

However, one year later in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, he became one of the loudest and looniest Qanon stop-the-steal conspiracy theorists. Perhaps he had already started to loose his edge during the Unsworth/Musk trial.

This is almost the worst part of it for me.

BTW Almost all BUsiness Managment schools teach that surroudning yourself with Yes Men is just about the worst move you can make.
And yeah,Musk has fans for whom he can do no wrong ..good thing is there are a lot fewer of them then there were a year ago.

So apparently Musk is on a Twitter Space (an audio livestream thingy) right now saying that he wants people to be able to link their bank account to their Twitter profile, and that they would maybe get money market accounts or debit/credit cards? I dunno. It's really weird and happening live now so more detailed reporting will be coming out later.

That's got a real 20 minutes into the future vibe to it.

Oh, definitely a guy who's repeatedly run afoul of the SEC should get into banking and credit cards. It's a certain recipe for huge success for him.

Oh yes put Twitter and money together. Also would someone be so kind as to hold my collection of oily rags and this burning flare while I mix this bleach and chlorine together? I need to time to water my Mogwai. Insert further funny "things which don't go together" examples as need.

And something tells me internet security is one of hte areas Musk would but back ruthlessly on..much to the joy of hackers who could get access to the debit card info....

As someown who has never used twitter, and viewed it mainly as a source of entertainment for dumb celebs to make fools of themselves on, it could vanish and I would not miss it.

This is one of his intentions that he calls an "everything app" and I called upthread "feature bloat".

Apparently the most common messaging app in China allows people to make financial transactions, Venmo-like, without leaving the app. Musk wants Twitter to do that too. He wants to plug features into Twitter to make it a multipurpose tool - the only app that people need. I personally think this is tremendously misguided.

Well he's a good match for a company that is under stringent FTC requirements.

By the way, is there anyone left at Twitter who remembers that the company is still under a pretty stringent FTC consent decree that has, you know, some requirements about launching new products & services and having a written plan about their security?

Only a complete idiot would trust this goddamn ************ with their money.
