Is the Roman Catholic Church in Freefall?

Well played there - https://www.theguardian.com/books/2...rch-bans-visit-by-gay-author-to-london-school - the diocese of Southwark!

Ever heard of the equalities legislation we have here?

No? Maybe you should find out, as it's been around for a time and it's been a long time since we got rid of Section 28.

Shows how the RCC hasn't changed one single iota - note how the chaplain said “caused scandal in the local area and has brought our international reputation into doubt”." As ever the priority is the church itself.

Meanwhile in Camden, New Jersey - https://www.theguardian.com/us-news...holic-diocese-alleged-sexual-abuse-settlement - the local scumbag "Tee hee, let's go bankrupt to try to avoid paying out for all that abusing of children we did!" expletive deleted, expletive deleteds have generously "agreed" to make a bit of a financial reparation.

No doubt they'll all go to confession and be told it's alright as it isn't a real court there, as it's a nasty secular thing (y'know, actual legal one).

I tried to look for a better place to post this, but this'll do.

Father of former choirboy launches civil action against Cardinal George Pell and Catholic Church

The father of a former choirboy, who prosecutors alleged had been abused by George Pell, has launched legal action against the cardinal and the Catholic Church.

In 2018 Cardinal Pell was convicted of abusing two teenage choirboys more than 20 years earlier, but the High Court unanimously quashed the convictions in 2020 following an appeal.

One of the former choirboys died in 2014.

His father, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has now lodged a civil claim against Cardinal Pell and the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne in the Supreme Court of Victoria.

Shine Lawyers, who are representing the father, said the plaintiff was making a claim of nervous shock relating to finding out about allegations his son was abused.

Cardinal Pell has always maintained his innocence.

Note for mods: There is one additional sentence at the website, but the article was so short it was hard to be Rule 4 compliant while still quoting the relevant information.

I’m still smelling family, not the alleged victim, aiming for a payout from the payout friendly Catholic Church.

ETA of course the alleged victim is deceased. I am not criticising him.

I think that, unless you explain yourself very carefully, it would be safe to assume that you are a homophobe

Does the pedophile-priests scandal suggest that it is a bad idea to allow gay men to hang around with young boys?

Does the Operation Yewtree scandal (amongst many, many others) suggest that it is a bad idea to allow heterosexual men to hang around with young girls?

I think it's a bad idea to allow pedophiles to hang around with young boys and young girls. People of any other sexual orientation can usually be trusted around children.

You seem unaware that those paedophile-priests scandals involved many young girls being assaulted, why you assume they were only about young boys is quite telling.

Seems to be like a throwback to the days of my youth. Homosexuals, exhibitionists, child molesters, and so on were all perverts and indistinguishable from each other.

Also notice the assumption that a gay man is automatically also a paedophile.

Yes, the good old 1970s, when gay people were firmly in the closet where they belonged.

I think it's reasonable to assume it was drive-by bigotry, until further explanation is forthcoming

The answer to the OP remains, disappointingly, "not really."

If the census figures in Ireland are looks at:

Statistics. In the 2016 Irish census 78.3% of the population identified as Catholic in Ireland; numbering approximately 3.7 million people. Ireland has seen a significant decline from the 84.2% who identified as Catholic in the 2011 census.

There would seem to be room for optimism.

I find this news item from the ABC interesting and amusing:

Tasmania's Catholic Archbishop Julian Porteous has agreed to change a reading to be included in a graduation mass next week after backlash on social media and concerns it would be inappropriate.
St Mary's College, an all-girls' school in Hobart, had been told the first reading would be from Ephesians 5: 21-33, which includes:
"Wives should regard their husbands as they regard the Lord, since as Christ is head of the Church and saves the whole body, so is a husband the head of his wife; and as the Church submits to Christ, so should wives submit to their husbands, in everything."

Interesting that an Archbishop can be dictated to and comply after lay people complain about the wording of his sermon. High ranking clergy from the past would be revolving in their graves methinks.

Not the first time the good archbishop has been targeted by protesters:

In 2015, there were reports of Guilford Young College students chalking a rainbow outside the school in response to comments the archbishop made against same-sex marriage.

Whatever has happened to the authority of the Roman Catholic Church?
