Yeah, because Italy's economy is SO robust it can afford to do a Brexit.

Just like Hungary I expect a lot of hot air for the local press, but not the insanity to actually go trough with such an action.

If I lived in either of those countries (or any EU country), I would wait to see the success of Brexit first. :eye-poppi

Anyone aggressively shorting the pound?

Brexit has been a tremendous success - for the architects of Brexit that is, they're tens or hundreds of millions of pounds ahead on the deal.

For the other 99.999% of us, it's been an unmitigated ****-storm

The problem is that Italy, or Hungary, or wherever will have their own architects of xxxxit who want out of the EU and they'll stir up whatever kind of populist nonsense to encourage the underinformed to vote against their own self interest.

Yup. The old "Make Our Country Great Again". Visions of the Nuremberg Rallies flash through my head. :scared:

Funny yesterday I was listening to an Italian documentary maker talking about how the Italian right have moved to be more positive on the EU and internationalism. Presumably yet another effect of the horror show destroying the UK.

That, and a heavy reliance on EU funds. At some point Italy will have dip deep into those funds to pay off their Covid bill, so even the hard right know they can't go all gung ho, lest the funds are shut off.

See for instance Poland recently, where the government had to bring out the old "Germany owes war reparations"-card, since they had budgetted for EU post-Covid recovery funds, which was subsequently denied them.

They extreme right had won and they are anti EU. Hungary ditto. France is getting closer to voting in extreme right. They aren't going to destroy the EU but every move like this weakens it.
Has there been any actual proposal for Italy to leave the EU.

I got interested in the Italian election a couple of months ago, just one of those curiosity things and I’ve noticed as she was getting more and more likely to be able to form a government her rhetoric against the EU started to change. It is now about working to make it better, get rid of corruption, to ensure Italy is getting its due attention and so on, not to leave the EU.

Though I suppose that’s quite similar to David Cameron’s lines in 2013 when he began his ill-fated ‘renegotiation’ with the EU.

Italian PM wants to emulate Czech gov. That's not even within same universe as Hungary or any other far right morons. WTF you are talking about France?

I think the comments about France are that Le Pen has been a second round candidate for the last two presidential elections.
