I am so sickened.

I can't imagine what the parents of the boys feel. Are they asking themselves how they might have promulgated their children's belief that the homeless are less than human? Are they self-righteously defending them.

I just can't understand this.

Three young men (oldest is 18) have been arrested for beating homeless men. One of the beaten men has a died as a result of the injuries.

One of the attacks was caught on security tape - it happened on a college campus. Two boys used baseball bats on 50-ish man.

As a result of the tape being played on television, two of the boys turned themselves in (with lawyers in tow).

:D OK, that made me laugh.

You're a stinker, Tobias. Here I was being all serious for once.

Having known teens and early-20s individuals who bragged about beating up, burning, or otherwise assaulting the homeless, as well as their parents in many cases, i'd say it's likely that their parents fall into one of three categories, only one of which is listed in your post.

1) They think it's hilarious, or at least normal and amusing "boys will be boys". They probably did the same thing themselves when they were younger and are just as thuggish as their children; which is why their children turned out the way they did. This most often applies only the father; and the mothers are usually abuse victims as well.

2) They will wring their hands and cry about how "society" and "a bad crowd" corrupted their otherwise perfect child. They'll go on about everything the did for their poor child, but the evil influences at school, in the neighborhood, etc. ruined their angel. They'll blame the school administrators and the local government for not keeping all those bad influences locked up and away from their child; television for all the violence that clearly made their child what he is, and so on. And they'll refuse to admit that it was their own bad parenting that turned their child into a spoiled self-absorbed amoral scum.

3) They'll insist that there's no way that their child could ever have done such a thing, that he's been unfairly blamed, that it is mistaken identity, that their child is being persecuted and harassed for something that he clearly could never have done. They won't say that they haven't paid the slightest bit of attention to their child for most of his life.

This is big news here in Florida. My only thoughts is that the boys are cowards. One beating, caught on video, showed a boy beating a homeless man with what appeared to be a bat. Filthy cowards.

Charlie (I hope they enjoy their new roles as prison boy toys) Monoxide

Amen to that, Charlie.

I'm sure the only reason they turned themselves in is that every one they knew saw the tape and said 'hey, isn't that you with the bat?'

They aren't merely cowards, they are criminals, and of the worst sort. Try them as adults and lock them away. Preferably in each a nice cell with a big, ugly, hairy, HORNY roomie. Who has a bat.

Not just criminals, but sociopaths.

Yes, one with a BIG bat. And give them no access to syrup or jelly. Make them toss that salad with no dressing.:jaw-dropp

I live in Miami, and we got an increase in the number of homeless peope around in the winter. I give money to the same handful of homeless people regularly, and they often bring up beatings, either on themselves, or on other homeless people. The New Times down here did a profile on "Santa" a local homless guy, who was hit by with a baseball bat by passing motorists, a few months ago. I don't think that everything I hear is true, but I suspect homeless people are targeted by sociopaths like this a lot more often than one might think.

Yeah, I hear ya. I live outside Detroit and have heard a lot about the violence on the homeless. I guess the average homeless person always carries around knifes or some weapon for defense because its really common. Because not too many people care about them, its going to go non reported, and the police quite frankly arn't gonna put some homeless assult on top of their "to do" list.
I think this has a lot to do with the net (oh crap, I never thought i'd say this, i'm getting old). The "Bum Fights" video's on the net are very popular. Just go to some BT and download them. They pay homeless people to beat each other up or attack each other. One of them I actually saw a clip of, they were treating it like the "Crocodile Hunter", this guy imitating an Austrailian accent dressed up like Steve Irwin, with help from others jumped on this homeless guy and held him and tied him up and did the whole skit talking about how its a vicious creature they are and prodding and poking them with the camera wedged in their faces. Then they do the release and run away just like the Croc Hunter. I sadly admit, I laughed my ass off the first time I saw it. It was quite funny. But as I look back, that was extremely mean and cruel. Those companies should have their butts sued off.
I don't have enough posts where I can post a link, but I'm sure there are a bunch out there if you google it "Bum Hunter". (actually I just tried to find a link, but I saw on two sites that the guy who did the "bum hunter" segments, actually contracted HIV from one of them and quit it. Good riddence.)
It's crap like this thats advertised on MTV that the little punks think is funny and i'm sure they want to try it to be cool.

The guys who did the bum fights videos were sued (successfully) by one of the homeless men filmed.

I think that this is a symptom of the times. Yes, the kids who did this are criminals, no doubt, the crime is in fact horrid, also no doubt, but I think the present political climate of "might makes right" contributes a great deal to the problem.

That, of course, in no way justifies what the kids did, and they deserve to be punished and "rehabilitated" accordingly.

I don't think 'an eye for an eye' kind of response serves either the victims or the criminals right here, but this has to be taken as a serious crime and prosecuted accordingly.

Even though this sort of thing has been happening consistently throughout recorded history?

No, you're right, it's all Bush's fault.

It's Bush's fault! Yes after only 17 posts! JJ wins the prize! It's true, the homeless have always been treated with utmost respect until, oh say the past 7 years.

ETA: Crap! Luchog beat me to it heh.

Seems to me there was a spate of such attacks quite a few years back, these being even worse in that the victims were set afire... Possibly NY.

There is something inherent in we humans that allows us to "de-humanize" others.
