New Website on Senator Joseph McCarthy

It is true that McCarthy's record on race is good, despite is mostly contrary record on just about everything else and his perennial lack of honesty. It's also apparently true that as a judge he took some care in divorce cases over children's welfare, even though his judicial record is otherwise quite spotty, including rushed rulings, mistakes and censure.

So I suppose we can give him that old "at least he made the trains run on time" kind of excuse. McCarthy was a lying, drunken, gambling, malicious, war profiteering, dope addicted, destructive closeted hypocrite so incompetent that even those who agreed with his preposterous crusade acknowledge that he did more harm than good. He lied outright for everything from elective position to evidence to military service. But hey, he wasn't a racist. Yay.

SOme biographers of Tail Gunner Joe claim he was not even a sincere Anti Communist; it was all for political purposes.

Whittaker Chambers certainly felt so. In one incident he was used by McCarthy, who dropped by to say hello, and then let the press believe he was consulting with an expert on Communist penetration.

This is a pointless, strawman argument. Many of the people who were positively identified as communists with rock-solid evidence were never detected by the Venona program.

I take it you didn't bother to read a single one of the articles on my website. /QUOTE]

The site shows how wild his accusations were. Are you saying that George Marshall and Dean Acheson were Soviet agents? Who were these spies that McCarthy uncovered, anyway?

McCarthy picked up all his techniques from Congressman Samuel Dickstein -- timing of accusations, berating of witnesses, and the like. You know, NKVD Agent CROOK?

I'm reminded of the story by Ted Morgan, "Joe McCarthy's Secret Life". McCarthy, being heavily in debt, became a Soviet Agent with the intention of discrediting anti-Communism -- and did the exact same things he did in real life. (At the suggestion of Dickstein, no less.)
