Split Thread Akron police shoot unarmed man 60 times

Clear a number of people here just plain HATE the police, period.
I keep on saying, you have a choice between an effective police force and people taking thelaw into their own hands.

Without a doubt. As I have said countless times, small police forces in the US lead to poor recruitment, induction, training, resourcing and professionalism. And while the Akron PD is not a Hicksville PD of 10, a 400 member PD is woefully small by world standards.

I see the ideas of Local Control of the police department does not exist inyour universe.

If those are the only two choices, why haven’t we chosen the former? Cops murdering citizens and almost universally getting away with it isn’t ‘effective’ as I would use the word.

Exactly. Best to shoot him to be sure.

Why take it to the ridiculous extreme? Can't police give chase on foot? Theres 8 of them. They can't spread out and corner him? Non-lethal ammo/wood bullets? There are choices available besides "let whoever that is go on shooting" and killing.

"If you can't handle me at my murdering innocent people you don't deserve me at my getting your cat out of a tree" is a fairly psychopathic take.

If you can't tell the difference between hating cops and now wanting them to murder people please get out of discussion.

Maybe, but I am not sure this is a case of cops kiling a innocent civilian.

There was never a real risk of a cop taking a bullet in this, and so many other, cop shootings. If what the police are claiming turns out to be true (the chief has already lied about one significant thing), then the cops were justified in having their guns in their hands. It isn’t evident that they were justified in shooting the suspect.

How many unarmed Americans can die because the cops are taught to kill when they feel the slightest provocation and you still be okay with it?

As of June 29, police in the United States had shot 17 unarmed people to death in 2022.

They feared for their lives. Shooting him was the safest option from their point of view. Cops have provided more than ample evidence that they are never, ever, required to put their own safety in peril.

Well "hate" is an awful strong word, but it becoming slowly more appropriate as cops continue to regularly show that shooting people, including those who have committed crimes, is their go to action.

Nice ignoring of the facts.

You probably regret the guy did not bag a couple of cops when he fired at them.

Personal attack not necessary, but not entirely out of character, nor surprising. What I regret is that anyone was shot in this incident. Because shooting was completely unnecessary.

No it doesn’t, and why the **** should it?

There are local police stations everywhere that exercise police discretion and apply community police practices, but they are part of larger forces with high standards of recruitment, training, command and resourcing.

Surely there is ample evidence that policing in the US is badly broken and should be fixed.

Did not even one of those eight cops stop and think "hmm, are we maybe putting just a little bit too much lead into this target?"

Nope, it doesn't exist where I live.

Firstly, we have only one National Police force, and it enforces all laws in the whole country - every village, town and city... every region, district and province. This is because we don't have individual state (provincial) laws other than by-laws which in most cases only apply to property and public land (and in any case, such by-laws are always subject to the country's environmental laws).

Secondly, NONE of our Police force or any part of our judiciary are elected. i.e. we do not elect sheriffs or judges or prosecutors. Our law enforcement officers, judges and crown prosecutors are promoted to their positions on seniority and merit. If you are a Police Officer, and you are dismissed for some disciplinary reason or an illegal act of some kind, your career as a Police Officer is over. You cannot just sidle over to the next province and get a job as a cop there.

Thirdly, to become a Law Enforcement Officer in this country, you must first attend the Royal New Zealand Police College (located at Papakowhai, about 2km north of Porirua. If you pass, you get to be a cop - if you fail, that's it.... no career in the NZ Police for you.

Finally since the NZ police was formed 126 years ago, there have only been 30 cops killed in the line of duty by an offender. For the decade 2010 to 2020, the total number of people shot by police is 37.

I can already hear some of our American members screeching about tyranny and government control, but keep in mind that we didn't have a Revolutionary War to gain independence from an oppressive king, we didn't fight a civil war over slavery and we don't have a right to keep and bear arms. We don't, in this country, live in abject fear that the government is going to come and take our rights away - the idea of the people having to rise up and overthrow a tyrannical government isn't even a thing here. For the most part, our system of policing and our judiciary system has served us well for over 120 years.

How uncivilised!! You colonials know nothing.

At least around here, the small cities use the Sheriff's dept for their local enforcement. High school graduates and academy too. Two years of academy?

Which is plenty of time to make them paranoid. "If he is threatening and within 7 yards, kill him". Even if he only has a tree branch, a marlin spike, or a mason's trowel. Or a naked kook sitting on the toilet in his own apartment.

since when is it the job of the cops do decide who is innocent, and administer capital punishment if not?

Correct. In most parts of the civilised world cops are trained not to shoot fleeing suspects unless there is a clear present danger to the public, which is very hard to be certain about. If there are public around (and there is no mention of it in reports I’ve read) they are more endangered by stray police bullets.

This whole “he had to be killed in case he encountered a theoretically possible bystander” is bunk.
