The Jan. 6 Investigation

I kind of favor the simplification of Frank Wilhoit:

"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit:

There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."

thanks, that's going to be my sig one of these days!

My "Ask near literally any question and ~60% of American will answer correctly, or at least honestly and incorrectly with normal paramaters and ~40% will answer wrongly, dishonestly, or just troll" rule of thumb remains surprisingly consistent and accurate.

6 out of 10 Americans think Trump should be charged for the Jan 6 riot.

McCarthy is starting to get some GOP blowback from the Jan 6 hearings

It seems that a number of McCarthy's colleagues think he stuffed up badly in the way he handled the situation as regards Republican participation in the investigation. I posted earlier, in another thread, about how he had two opportunities to make sure he had his people in the picture, and spurned both of them. Well now, that plan seems to have come back and bit him on the arse.

Links to full articles at the bottom, but to summarize, his "toys out of the cot" tantrum has resulted in Republicans being completely in the dark about what the Committee was learning, and what documents, texts and other communications they had gotten their hands on. GOP effectively didn't know what the Committee had, so

- they were unable to prepare any public defences for Trump.
- they could not influence the direction of the investigation.
- there has been no-one there to ask contrary questions during public or private proceedings.
- no possibility of leaking any information or evidence.
- no way to dilute the panel’s findings in advance of a final report (expected in September).
- there have been no GOP allies to try to throw spanners in the works during the public presentations

This has resulted in the Committee being able to deliver to the public a seamless, very compelling and uninterrupted presentation, most importantly, without the usual grandstanding, ego-tripping and partisan bickering we usually see at these kinds of hearings. Additionally, we don't have politically motivated politicians using their five minutes to indulge in their "go to" disruption tactics of attacking the credibility of witnesses, asking them irrelevant questions they don't really want the answers to, and not giving them the chance to answer (Gym Jordan, Ron Paul and Mat Gaetz, I'm looking at you), a tactic that usually resulted the Chairman having to give additional uninterrupted time to the witnesses so that they could answer.

Probably even worse for McCarthy, he's even getting some blowback from The Fat Orange Turd.

From the Washington Post article:
McCarthy thought that by walking away entirely, he would be able to discredit the work of the Committee as 'partisan'

Bad call. With none of his allies there to throw sand into the gears, the committee — which still included two Republicans, Reps. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois — was able to organize a seamless presentation. Cheney has played a star role, and mostly Republican witnesses are telling the story.

And without disruption, the committee has also been able to look at what role Republican members of Congress may have played in the day’s events.

From the MSNBC Article:
"Yesterday, Donald Trump went considerably further. 'Unfortunately, a bad decision was made', the former president said during a radio interview. He added that it 'was a bad decision not to have representation on that Committee. That was a very, very foolish decision.'

In the same interview, Trump, looking ahead to the possibility of a House Republican majority, insisted that he hasn’t endorsed anyone in the race for Speaker.

Looks like Kevin "Spineless" McCarthy will be needing to make another trip south to Mar-A-Lardo to kiss the arse of his naked Emperor!!

"McCarthy thought that by walking away entirely, he would be able to discredit the work of the Committee as 'partisan'"

From what I've read in this forum, he's not the only one who thinks he would be able to discredit the work of the Committee as 'partisan'.

Yep, McCarthy misjudged. Probably underestimated how much evidence the Jan 6 Committee would actually uncover. These guys are so used to the public hearings where one party tosses out nonsense like Gym Jordan does and, depending on the situation, the other party compliments the witness. The Jan 6th committee is carrying out an actual investigation the way they should be done by Congress.

On a separate note, I was waiting for Colbert to come on tonight and clear things up about the crew getting arrested last week at the Capitol 'complex'. He didn't disappoint.

Faux News' absurd report this was some double standard and these guys were insurrectionists is just that, absurd. I won't bother linking to Faux.

You can't sweep this under the carpet, Colbert! We all know that Triumph the Insult Dog is really part of the Deep State and Soros, Hillary C, and Bill Gates are really pulling his strings.

ETA: On a serious note, that clip of Trump is pathetic. The man does not live in reality. He needs serious time with a psychiatrist.

Ongoing hearings...

a couple quick takeaways from my overall sense if what I'm watching:

1) but for a handful of higher level Republicans with a conscience, we could be living in a dictatorship right now.

2) any claims of these hearings being "partisan" has been put to rest by the sheer
number of Republicans who have testified that what T and company did was illegal and immoral.

1)They were threatened by the Deep State to lie, and

2)They're traitorous RINOs anyway.

"That crowd I incited to riot was the biggest crowd I've ever spoken to. Nobody mentions that."
It's insane.

Wait....there were even more than the million+ people Trump claims attended his inauguration...or even the 300,000-600,000 that that is more accurately estimated? He can't even remember his own lies.:jaw-dropp

In fact, T himself wrote Rusty Bower (AZ speaker of the house, 1st witness) today, just to let him know that he is a traitor and "RINO"

As if the death threats he has been getting all along weren't enough to let him know his new found status.

Maybe Congress should have a vote to officially change the definition of "Republican' to mean "Trumpist" Im sure a few Democrats would vote for it.

No secret that , behnd closed doors, many the GOP think that McCarthy is simply too stuid and too weak to be a good speaker of the house.

A sad truth is what Sterling said: "we're dealing with people's hearts." Hearts over minds. Feelings over facts. This is evidenced by the lawyer Sterling showed step by step how the claims about the so-called 'suitcases under the table' were normal election process, all to which the lawyer agreed, but then resorted to "But in my heart, I know they cheated". This is the kind of irrational and willful blindness we're dealing with when it comes to the election conspiracists. Denial is a powerful thing.

A thousand poets writing in a thousand languages for a thousand years could not describe how much I don't care how much any Republican does anything when it doesn't matter.

I'm so done with the "Oh but when the moon is full some Republicans walk out to the Moors, find a cave, go to the deepest depths of it, cover their mouth with their hand, and whisper 'Trump is a poopie head'" thing.

If you don't care enough to care when it matters, then you don't care.

It's like being a vegetarian, but only between meals.

Wow! This is damning testimony. It shows just how hard Drumpf and his cult tried to keep him in power, how they all harassed people, threatened them, coerced them to break the law... much worse than I imagined.

They're on the last witnesses and it's horrible what this family (daughter, mother, grandmother) went through thanks to Drumpf and Giuliani's selfish bid to keep 45 in power.

Biden should offer these people secret service protection. They deserve it more than Drumpf's kids.

Cheney is pointing out how cowardly Drumpf's minions have been refusing to answer the committee's questions.
