On school shootings, Australia (and no doubt the UK) do not have school police. How many school shootings have resulted in the past 30 years due to this scandalous dereliction of government duty? Well I’m not entirely sure of the UK, I’m betting none.

Dunblane in 1996. After which pistols became far more tightly controlled. Although a certain Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson wrote of those measures:

“Nanny is confiscating their toys. It is like one of those vast Indian programmes of compulsory vasectomy.”

Matthew McConaughey is speaking at a White House press briefing. He says he was born and grew up in Uvalde, where his mother taught school and where he learned responsible gun ownership, and he returned to meet with the parents of victims. He's talking at length about the dead kids.

Is the White House supposed to be star-struck with MM speaking to them or something? I don't give a **** what he thinks on this issue. Have all the parents there handing out a pile of funeral cards to the White House, and dump the shell casings on the floor.

What a ******* stupid thing to bring up when talking about dead kids that were shot by someone who legally bought a gun. The guy who killed those children he's talking about didn't do anything illegal with his gun until he started mowing down 10 year olds. God I hate stupid ******* people.

He was calling for tougher gun laws, including laws that would have kept AR15s out of the hands of 18-year-olds, and he was making the point that he's not a crazy gun-hater. It's regrettable that it's necessary, but it's routine for promoters of gun safety legislation to say that they're gun owners themselves to make it harder for the NRA to paint them as no-nothing libtards. Nothing stupid about it.

I knew he was there to promote gun action, but that doesn't mean he isn't tone deaf when doing it. If I was a parent of one of those kids I don't think I'd appreciate hearing a celebrity tell me that responsible gun owners are in Uvalde, TX.

I get what he's saying, but the way he said it was pretty dumb.

He grew up in this small town, and his mom taught kindergarten there. He has a direct personal connection. He probably imagined his Mom dead on a classroom floor. The fact that he's a celebrity doesn't mean he's not entitled to express an opinion.

He met with families of the victims and talked about them individually when he spoke at the White House. I doubt he said anything that the families didn't approve.

And the shooter likely also learned responsible gun ownership too just like Matthew Mcconaughey did. Nothing we know about him says he was irresponsible with his guns, just that he decided to kill a bunch of people which is not negligent just a political decision others don't agree with.

He bought two AR15s as soon as he turned 18, and immediately set out to commit mass murder. I'd say that's plenty irresponsible. Just a 21-year minimum age for purchase by itself might have saved 21 lives.

It is a choice you disagree with it isn't like some negligent parent who leaves a gun around and their kid shoots their other kid. That is how he used his guns, there is no indication that he handled them in an irresponsible manner.

What the **** is this? Are we actually hair splitting about whether or not mass murder is "irresponsible" gun use or is this just a bit?

What can you possibly mean? He didn't shoot himself in the foot. Is that enough?

Are you channelling Cain here? :boggled:

Weapons, poll

So? I don't give a **** what he does or doesn't imagine, and nor should the White House. The thoughts of some actor mean Jack squat. Is his opinion supposed to have some influence or pull on the Executive Branch? It's obscene celebrity worship.

Obviously not. Biden, or some staffer, brought him in because he's from Uvalde and holds some sway with people. Maybe he'll convince a few people in Texas that it isn't "libural", or un-american or ungodlike or whatever to be for some gun control measures. Thats my guess as to what the WH is hoping for anyways.

If you don't like it, you are free to not watch.

If murdering children isn't using your guns in an irresponsible manner... uhmm what is??

He didn't handle them in irresponsible manner BEFORE the act.

Come on people, you really enjoy pointless bickering that much ?
Every time you have to guess what the other person wants to say, to some extent. But why go for the worst possible alternative you can think of ?

What a load of ******* horse puckey!

This is a person who was BORN in that town, and GREW UP in that town. The fact of his celebrity means that he has a voice that is more likely to be heard. IT IS HIS ******* DUTY TO USE THAT VOICE. IT IS HIS ******* DUTY SPEAK OUT IN SUPPORT OF THOSE GRIEVING FAMILIES.

If I had known he grew up in Uvalde, and had said nothing, I would be very, very disappointed in him for that, and he would have gone down, as a person, in my estimation!!
