At least this one seems to have been stopped before he shot anyone.

Gun advocates like to make fun of "Gun-Free School Zones" by pointing out that a mass shooter isn't going to care; but THIS is actually the reason they exist. Without the gun-free zone law in place, it's quite possible the most police could have done was detain and release this kid to try again later.

I'm good with that decision, for reasons related to what lauwenmark said.

(Welcome, Lauenmark, I don't think I've seen your posts before.)

I want the CDC to be studying germs. You don't need an MD or PhD to figure out that guns kill people.

The Center for Disease Control and Injury Prevention, aka the CDC, collects the data needed to investigate all causes of mortality and morbidity. Along with the expertise needed to find patterns and trends.

Seems to me the same U.S. politicians who dismiss gun violence as a problem of mental health, are the same ones who stopped the CDC doing gun violence research.

Who do they expect to do anything?

They tend also to reduce funding for mental health.

you can buy Kinder Eggs in the U.S. I just saw some in the checkout line less than 30 minutes ago. I don't know if the configuration is the same but the label did say "Surprise toy inside!"

The egg splits down the middle, with the candy on one side and the toy on the other, each side individually sealed. The toy isn't inside the candy like the European version.

If you are going to deal with this issue but not by gun control or mental health services, What is left? Digital surveillance and public profiling seems a likely pathway.

The candy is entirely different as well. Some sort of vanilla or white chocolate goo with a crunchy chocolate ball plopped into it like a piece of stray cereal. I won't even start with the crappy toys.

To bring this back on topic, here's an interview that appears to claim that the cops on scene evacuated their own kids, then waited for reinforcement. The interviewee certainly seems to treat the question as if it's a live rattlesnake. Interview footage here:

On another forum, I saw it cynically described as a symptom of police behavior and training in general.

"That unarmed shoplifter could rush at me and attack me. For my own safety, I should shoot him."
"That armed gunman could shoot me. For my own safety, I should keep my distance and avoid him."

If the US does go to hell be carefull; it might drag Canada down with it.
I am getting a little tired of schanfeurde about the US on display here.

Has it occurred to you that we might already be damned well aware of how the US going town the tubes could directly affect us up here? "When the US sneezes the world catches cold." We Canucks follow US affairs to a degree that dwarfs utterly whatever reciprocal attention you lot may pay us.

What you seem to reflexively interpret as schadenfreude is really a mixture of stupefaction, fear and anger. At the most powerful nation careening into madness that is simultaneously laughable and dangerous.

You'll just have to take what the civilized world is expressing, until the insanity abates at least.

Read between the lines and the cops ran away. Somehow there was an exchange of gunfire outside, then nothing while cops waited for backup and this guy killed without interference inside.

All this money we piss away on cops and when it's their time to risk their necks to actually serve their community they're all pissing their pants waiting for swat to show up. Meanwhile teachers are blocking bullets with their bodies.

Maybe you should stop 'reading between the lines' and actually read what happened.

Law enforcement agencies are very slowly releasing more details about the police response.

Today it has been reported:

When he first entered the school grounds, school police "confronted" but did not "engage" the shooter.

It took an hour for police to enter the single classroom the shooter had locked himself in.

During the standoff (if that's what it was), some police officers entered other areas of the school and evacuated their own children.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I thought the same thing reading that report.

Here is a local news report about the police response. It indicates that some agency spokespersons have given conflicting information. Other information is vague.

“Go in there! Go in there!” nearby women shouted at the officers soon after the attack began, said Juan Carranza, 24, who saw the scene from outside his house, across the street from Robb Elementary School in the town of Uvalde. Carranza said the officers did not go in.

...

Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw said it was “within 40 minutes or so" from when Ramos opened fire on the school security officer and when the SWAT-like Border Patrol team shot him. Law enforcement officials later said it was unclear if the gunman and the security officer had fired on one another.

A law enforcement official familiar with the investigation said the Border Patrol agents had trouble breaching the classroom door and had to get a staff member to open the room with a key. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation.

Yes I agree it’s a huge effort, but in Australia we had massive semi automatic gun ownership in Australia, but after a number of well known massacres in Australia, culminating with Port Arthur, gun control happened. We haven’t had any since then.

Do gun deaths still happen here? Yes of course. But we don’t have pathetic loners tooling up and killing many people any more.
Which illustrates how hard change is. We needed numbers too.
50 corpses to your mere 34, quarter century earlier.

I listened to that and I wonder if the cop misspoke. "Went and got their own kids" and what, left the other kids in the classrooms behind?

I don't buy that. They might have evacuated classrooms and went to their own kids' classes first or any number of other scenarios. I think that cop is going to take that back or explain it in a bit more detail.

I also didn't hear anything like the cops who first engaged the shooter waited for back up. At least that wasn't obvious.

It is easy to believe had one of the cop's kids been in the classroom where most of the kids were killed that cop would have done a lot more to engage the shooter.

Unfortunately when cops **** up they lie about it so without someone looking at videos of the whole thing, we'll never hear the exact details if they aren't favorable to the cops.

Out of curiosity, what's an "AK-47 style pistol"?

An oxymoron.

It's either AK47-style, as in assault rifle, or it's a pistol, of which both semi- and fully-automatic style have existed for aeons.

I guess you could call a pistol "AK-47-style" if it's hopelessly inaccurate but can still be fired after six months at the bottom of a swamp.
