Matt Gaetz reported to be leaving the House

"Matt Gaetz is turning into everything Republicans were trying to turn Hunter Biden into" - seen on the internet

To be fair, guys who use their proximity to wealth and power to do a lot of drugs and bang hookers aren't exactly rare in DC.

This would probably be a nothing scandal if it weren't for the fact that Gaetz seemed to mess around with high schoolers rather than adult women.

This is very bad news for Gaetz. Its really hard to overestimate how important this is. The Feds don't just offer immunity in return for testimony against low hanging fruit. They only offer it to people when they are going after someone further up the tree.... and since they already have Gaetz's wingman (Joel Greenberg) dead to rights, unless there is someone else in between or up there with Gaetz, then this is a pretty clear indication that Gaetz is the target.

Nah, it's just that every accusation is an admission.

If republicans accuse some democrat of snorting coke off a dead hooker, the first thing to do is to figure out which republican is actually doing it.

A bit of an update:

A close friend and former government employee of Joel Greenberg, Joe Ellicott, is set to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and distribution of a controlled substance in the latest development in an investigation that includes a probe into allegations of possible sex trafficking of a minor by Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz, which he vehemently denies.

A bit of an update:

Ellicott's attorney, Joe Zwick, said his client has met with federal investigators to share what he knows about allegations against Gaetz, including sexual contact with a minor, sex trafficking and obstruction of justice.

"He was able to shed light on all of those issues," Zwick said.

Maybe that light is going to cause a cockroach like Gaetz to scurry off into the dark. Or maybe a nice, dark cell. We can only hope.

The shock jock that just plead guilty claims to have been in the room when Greenberg called up Gaetz to discuss their child sex trafficking problem:

A teenager both men had paid to have sex with was underage, Greenberg claimed. Now, two sources tell The Daily Beast, a cooperating witness can confirm details of that call for one damning reason: He was in Greenberg’s office when the call took place.

The witness, “Big Joe” Ellicott—Greenberg’s longtime best friend and an employee at the Seminole County tax office—recently pleaded guilty to fraud and drug charges as part of a cooperation agreement with federal prosecutors.

Looks like the investigation was moving along just as planned this whole time. As has been mentioned repeatedly, these things evolve and sometimes it's not quickly.

*IF* what's being reported is true there aren't going to be a lot of options for Gaetz. I doubt he'll see prison time considering he has no previous record. If he can plea to lesser charges he might, maybe, possibly, be able to avoid registering as a sex offender, but I doubt many are going to be forgiving when it comes to sex with minors.

I can't recall whether the girl would have been trafficked across state lines, but paying her with the Cash app or Venmo would make this a federal deal, right?

I would think so, but it's all kind of confusing to me. Even more to your point, if she went to the Bahamas, or anywhere out of the country, does that have even more implications?

Why? They didn't have any problem voting for Roy Moore. Yeah, I know there was no proof he actually had sex with minors, but it wasn't for lack of trying.

That's true. If she's "hot" it would probably get him re-elected with a high five to follow.

We're nearly a year into this now and from this side of the Atlantic there's no indication that Matt Gaetz will face any kind of censure, much less be forced to leave the House over the allegations in the OP.

Matt Gaetz was never going to leave voluntarily, and the GOP was never going to discipline him.

But, if/when criminal charges are brought, THEN he might be forced out. But the wheels of the justice system can grind slowly. It was only in late January that an ex-girlfriend got immunity to testify and one of the co-consprators reached a deal. And anything they say needs to get investigated/verified.

You literally rezzed this thread for an extremely weak "told ya so"? Cool.

Criminal investigations into House members have gone on for years in some cases. I wouldn't read into the lack of action just yet.

His polling doesn't look good, so there is a good chance that he will be removed from office this year anyway. At which point, the standard "White Republican Politician Who Left Office in a Scandal" trope will kick in (AKA "Let bygones be bygones").

I'd say 35 - 40% will find a reason not to care.
