Cont: Cancel culture IRL Part 2

A cultural event was cancelled.

Strange, the very first sentence in the article says:

The Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra has faced public backlash after its decision to pull 19th-century Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky from a concert due to take place on 18 March.

Sounds a lot like the concert is happening on March 18th, just without certain pieces..

And when you consider this instance it becomes even more opposite-world, the only possible "cancel culture" bods in this story are those identified as being the "public backlash" against the changes.

Perhaps we are misunderstanding you Chris_Halkides and you are meaning to be criticising those that are trying to "cancel" the orchestra with their "backlash"?

Symphony No. 2

No it wasn't.
An All-Tchaikovsky concert, which included his Symphony No. 2 was cancelled; it was replaced with a concert that included music from the movie The Cowboys, composed by John Williams. I am not terribly interested in word games.

"Known as Little Russian because of its use of Ukrainian folksongs. In Czarist times, Ukraine was referred to as "Little Russia." The term began to gain a derogatory sense only after Tchaikovsky's death, and now might be considered offensive to Ukrainians." link

Alexander Malofeev's concerts

"On Tuesday, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (OSM) announced the cancellation of three performances by [pianist Alexander] Malofeev with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas scheduled for this week, on the grounds of “the serious impact on the civilian population of Ukraine caused by the Russian invasion.” It would be “inappropriate to receive Mr. Malofeev this week,” according to the OSM." WSWS

A recital of his in Vancouver was also cancelled. To the best of my knowledge the music of John Williams is not being heard instead.

We heard you the first time. Repeating it isn't an argument.

How about answering anyone's question as to what the problem is supposed to be exactly?

Cardiff is not in Canada

Your statement is false; this is a different cancellation from either the one in Cardiff or New York City. Please try to keep up.

All picked cherries are the same.

How about explaining to use what exactly is the problem with any of this?

What is the right course of action

I have a better idea. How about your explaining why it was right to cancel concerts by a Russian pianist?

There’s has been no cancellation in the Cardiff story, the cancel culture louts may have caused a ruckus but the orchestra hasn’t been forced to change its mind about what it wants to perform.

a working definition

“[Cancel culture is] a method of withdrawing support for public figures or companies. It can also be considered to be used as a form of online shaming on social media platforms.” This definition comes from a Woman in her 50s who is a moderate Democrat. From a link previously provided.

Best shown of course by such groups as the Million Moms Here is a list of their attempts at canceling last year.

Right wing christians have been using cancel culture for ages.

Sour notes

If one cancels a performance by a musician, one is withdrawing financial support.

One, there is no reason to connect any given musician with political decisions made by leaders of a government. To cancel a concert is to punish one person for the actions of another.

Two, specifically with respect to a Russian musician, they may have friends or family in Russia. Asking them to denounce Putin as a condition of giving a concert is asking them to walk on a knife's edge. If they say too much, there could be repercussions for their loved ones.

Wow are you going to be upset when you hear about the sanctions being leveled against Russia that hit all russians in the wallet not just Putin. There is clearly no room for that kind of collective punishment.
