The Russian Invasion of the Ukraine.

The only logical conclusion, which is what they are saying in Russian propaganda, is that the Ukraninan "neo-nazis" must be blowing up their own houses and torching their homes just to blame proud righteous innocent Russian peacekeepers.

This kind of denial is a staple of genocide denial of all kinds: villages are being burned by the hated minority themselves and were being falsely blamed! It's just another outrage against us by them! We're the real victims in all of this, so even if we did burn down their villages it would be okay because it's a just revenge!

Russia is not bombing Ukrainian cities.

They are targeting, with high precision, Neo-Nazi military infrastructure only. The Nazis placed them in civilian areas so as to create the illusion of civilian casualties.

By a mad coincidence, I just watched a doco about how the wildlife hijacked Pripyat. It was fascinating.. Wolves, bears, deer and so on. They seem to have no bleeps to give. The wild hogs were interesting. They naturally sequester the radioactive material in non critical areas of their bodies.

Yet it kills people. The doco I watched does not seem to be online, but here is a similar one. 50 minutes of the wild reclaiming Pripyat. Right next door to Chernobyl. The expectation was a nuclear wasteland. Nature was apparently not interested.

I am kind of reminded of Sam Neill in Jurrasic Park saying "Life finds a way". Or was it Goldblum?

Humans get all whiny when too many people start dropping dead due to cancer. Other animals don't have that problem.

You mean like Ronald Reagan?

Huh?

How many nation states have had democracy successfully imposed from the outside?

The latest experiment was Afghanistan and that lasted how many days after the US said it was leaving?

All trading with China and Russia has achieved is the pacification of their respective populations against tyrannical leaders by giving them more material wealth but no more (or even less) freedom than they had before.

If fact it probably makes democracy even less likely to appear in these countries enriched by neoliberal western governments because their populations now have a bit more to lose by upsetting the balance of power.

They aren't good enough when western alternatives are available. They can do the job if western alternatives are not available.

But they can't even do that if even they aren't available. Which they aren't, now that TSMC is shutting them out.

Ukraine may have nothing to do with Harris, but thanks to Biden, Harris has something to do with Ukraine, or at least with the official US government's handling of the invasion of Ukraine.

Are you new? Vice presidents are PR. Actual work is done by the secretary of state. In my lifetime there have only been two vice presidents who had real work: Bush and Cheney, the former because Reagan was non compos for part of his terms and the latter because the former's son was letting his dad's cronies run the joint. Harris, regardless of opinions on her worthiness, is a gesture.

Given that Russia has been spreading false stories about Ukraine chemical and biological weapons programs, I wouldn't be surprised if Russia uses chemical weapons and tries to blame Ukraine.

After all their client did that in Ghouta (and other times in Syria)

What's the old saying; You can't put them back on the farm after they've seen Paris?

It's not 1992. These aren't Russians who grew up with bread lines and Ladas, same as their parents, and their parents before them and that's all they know.

When they can't get the same global popular culture and consumer products they've had their entire lives THEY ARE GOING TO NOTICE IT.

What has this to do with your earlier post and my response? It was Ronald Reagan who opened up trade with China. The idea at the time was to integrate China's economy with the West and over time it would lead to democratic reforms. It's not just liberals that have put trust in that strategy.

I thought it was Nixon who did that? And as a result of the US getting chummy with China, India got chummy with the USSR. (You just can't win with these junior high school cliques!)

Nixon thawed US diplomatic relations. Economic investment and trade didn't really start ramping up until the Reagan years. But that had less to do with Reagan specifically than with Deng Xiaoping's market reforms.

Nixon went to China. He did not open up trade with them. At least not much.

Sky News team's harrowing account of their violent ambush in Ukraine this week

On Monday, near Kyiv, chief correspondent Stuart Ramsay and his team were attacked. Camera operator Richie Mockler took two rounds to his body armour, Stuart was wounded. Their experience illustrates the scale of the mayhem and violence as Russia's invasion enters a new and deadlier phase.

There's a video you should see unless you are one of those sensitive types. No bloody gore or anything

Ukraine to receive $700m from World Bank this month

The World Bank Group says it is preparing to disburse $700m (£529m) in loans for Ukraine this month.

On Friday, its chairman David Malpass spoke on the phone with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The bank's board is now reviewing a $500m loan proposal called the Financing of Recovery from Economic Emergency in Ukraine or FREE Ukraine, according to a readout of the call.

The loan has been "increased with guarantees from bilateral partners, including the Netherlands and Sweden", the bank noted.

Blinken: Ukraine can win its war with Russia 'over time'

America's top diplomat Antony Blinken has told the BBC he is convinced Ukraine can win its war with Russia.

The US Secretary of State said he could not say how long the war would last but insisted that Ukraine’s defeat was not inevitable.

He acknowledged “the weight of the Russian military, if it puts everything into it, far exceeds that of what Ukraine is able to muster".

But he credited the Ukrainian people for their resolve and said he expects it will become clear "over time" that Moscow cannot subjugate the country's people to its will.

"If it’s the intention of Moscow to try somehow to topple the government and install its own puppet regime, 45 million Ukrainians are going to reject that one way or the other,” he said.

White House rebuffs senator who called for Putin's assassination

The White House has criticised Republican senator Lindsey Graham after he appeared to call for the assassination of Russian President Vladimir Putin on Twitter.

The outspoken American had said the only way Russia's invasion of Ukraine ends is "for somebody in Russia to take this guy out".

Graham, who represents South Carolina, tweeted: "You would be doing your country - and the world - a great service".

On Friday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters: "That’s not the position of the United States government and certainly not a statement you would hear come from the mouth of anybody working in this administration".

Graham's comments have drawn outrage in Russia, with the country's ambassador to the US slamming them as "hysterical Russophobia".
