Azerbaijan's state oil company, SOCAR, has confirmed to the BBC that it will provide Ukraine's firefighting and ambulance services with free petrol for the duration of the conflict.

The move follows a phone call between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Azeri President Ilham Aliyev.

Aliyev also pledged to provide Ukraine with deliveries of medicines and medical equipment.

A military commentator on the BBC commented that from Checnya and Syria (Allepo?), the Russians knew how to deal with insurgents in an urban environment, and you really did not want that to happen. Lots of people being killed and lots of destruction is not a good thing.

I've approved of Trudeau's response so far, and even if I'm not a Liberal per se, I've been content to have him as leader over the past while.

I want to see Russia deflated financially in particular, and I was glad to see Trudeau calling for harsh action with SWIFT.

Not overwhelmingly high-tech and partly executed by poorly motivated conscripts with the supply chains appearing predictably inefficient and corrupt.

I'm pretty sure at this point that NATO could, if it wanted to, declare all-out war, kill hundreds of thousands of civilians and military personnel, destroy a dozen cities, and win.

According to Channel 24 sources, the Ukrainian military blew up an echelon of 56 tanks that included General Magomed Tushayev, who was killed.

Source is the Kiev independent, which has been relatively non-sensational and reliable in all this. Then again, destroying 56 tanks seems a stretch.

Poland are doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

They're getting a lot of refugees.

Already 100 000 or so Ukranian refugees. Makes me wonder whether that was Putin's plan all along.

Undermining the unity in the European Union is definitely on his wishlist. Various refugee/migrant crises have shown that immigration is controversial issue for which the EU has not yet come up with a unified solution. If anything can split up the EU, that might be it.

We've already seen the attempt of getting refugees into Poland from Belarus. Poland managed to beat most of them back. God only knows how these poor people are doing stuck in Belarus.

Poland seems more welcoming to refugees from Ukraine than from the Middle East, but they may not be able to welcome them all. It remains to be seen how eager other EU countries will be to help Poland with their refugee problem when it refused to help other countries.

Countries in Western Europe have anti-immigration parties that are also against immigration from Eastern Europe, and which have accepted large Russian donations. Seems unlikely those parties are going to accept refugees from Ukraine.
