The French navy has intercepted a cargo ship in the English channel bound for the Russian city of St Petersburg, the BBC has learned.

French officials told the BBC that the ship was intercepted in line with new European Union sanctions and say it has been redirected to the northern port of Boulogne-Sur-Mer.

“A 127m-long Russia cargo ship called the 'Baltic Leader' transporting cars has been intercepted overnight by the French Navy in the Channel and escorted to the Port of Boulogne-Sur-Mer in Northern France," the official said.

"It has been taken to the French port after a request by the French government because it is suspected of belonging to a company targeted by EU sanctions against Moscow. French border forces are currently investigating the cargo ship. Crew aboard the 'Baltic Leader' has been cooperating with French authorities.”

The International Committee of the Red Cross should remove the dead bodies of "thousands" of Russians killed in the invasion so far and return them to Russia, Ukraine says.

The country's Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk told a televised briefing "these are thousands of the occupiers' bodies. This is a humanitarian need.

"We ask that the bodies of the Russian occupiers leave the territory and go to the Russian Federation."
She asked the Red Cross directly: "Do what it takes to settle this humanitarian problem."

Russia has so far not acknowledged any casualties.

Ukraine claims to have killed 3500 Russian soldiers. If that's true, or anywhere near true, that's insane.

In comparison, on the worst day of the Vietnam war, the Americans lost under 250 soldiers.

I would take it with a few grains of salt.

I certainly have no problem if it is true. Oh yes, I hope that they kill as many as they have to in order to defeat this evil invasion.

I really do think that Ukraine is holding out way more strongly than the Russians expected and every Western country needs to be shipping them as many arms as possible as long as Ukrainians want to keep fighting.

I'm taking it with a whole shaker of salt, but it's clear the Russians are meeting more resistance than they expected and are experiencing losses.

Today they tried to take another airport, south of Kiev, with paratroopers. Contingency plan for failing to take the airport in the north? Doesn't matter. It failed, and the Russian were beat back.

Russians have tried to infiltrate Kiev with soldiers in civillian clothing, in Ukrainian police uniforms and in Ukrainian military uniforms.

Russians have tried to infiltrate Kiev with soldiers in civillian clothing, in Ukrainian police uniforms and in Ukrainian military uniforms.

Zelensky has been speaking in a video address, saying his country's forces have stopped a Russian plan to capture him overnight and install their own leader.
"We've derailed their plan," Mr Zelensky said.
Ukrainian forces were in control of Kyiv and the main cities around it, he said.

Fighting on the edges of Kyiv seem to be small units of Russian 'special forces' and light units, not the main force which hasn't fought it's way there yet.

As I see it, while the Ukrainians are willing to fight, it is our duty to support. Those who undermine it are effectively pro-Putin and can all **** off.

sanctions on oligarchs are being delayed in the UK because their lawyers are involved and it's all going to court.

This story is being put about by Truss as the reason for delays in sanctions.

I think it's just a way to give the Russians time to withdraw their funds from the UK.

The 'lawers involved' is the same as 'we've asked Sue Gray to do a report' & 'we've asked the police to investigate'

The measure, effective from today, replaces a previous curfew from 22:00 to 07:00.

Western countries have stepped up arms deliveries to Ukraine but it says it needs more in order to resist Russia's bigger and better-equipped army.

Here is a summary of the military equipment Kyiv has bought or been given or promised, and the requests still outstanding.

The UNITED STATES has provided over $2.5 billion in military aid since 2014, including Javelin anti-tank missiles, coastal patrol boats, Humvees, sniper rifles, reconnaissance drones, radar systems, night vision and radio equipment. A bipartisan group of U.S. senators last week promised further supplies that could include Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, small arms and boats.

BRITAIN last week supplied a reported 2,000 short-range anti-tank missiles and sent British specialists to deliver training. It has also provided Saxon armoured vehicles.

BALTIC STATES Estonia is sending Javelin anti-armour missiles and Latvia and Lithuania are providing Stinger missiles.

TURKEY has sold Ukraine several batches of Bayraktar TB2 drones that it deployed against Russian-backed separatists in the eastern Donbass region, infuriating Moscow.

The CZECH REPUBLIC said last week it plans to donate a shipment of 152mm artillery ammunition.

GERMANY is ruling out arms deliveries to Ukraine but is co-financing a $6 million field hospital and providing the necessary training.
