The Russian Invasion of the Ukraine.

Zelensky, is a ******* hero!!!!

However I think Ukraine needs a living leader, not a dead one or one in a Gulag. I admire his balls but I really think he should flee west or even to Poland.

Ukraine needs a leader, but in the long run it also cannot be dependent on any one man or it will fail. So there is quite a bit of value in having a leader who is willing not only to risk his life, but also lose his leadership position. Ukraine needs a deep bench, and it needs its people to be ready to use than bench.

Issuing small arms to civilians and urging them to engage in insurgency seems like an invitation for Putin to start openly shelling civilian areas without having to worry about war crimes.

Either muster up at least a nominally-uniformed militia at least nominally under the Ukrainian military chain of command, or secure the refugee status of your civilians and do what you can to help them leave the area or shelter safely in place without becoming legitimate military targets.

It's kind of hard to ding Putin for firing into apartment blocks if you've just spent the past 24-48 hours doing everything you can to get the civilian residents of those blocks to join the fight.

They will also be in US terms illegal combatants or even terrorists; certainly not entitled to be protected under the Geneva conventions. If Russia followed the US example many may be scooped up into black prisons and held indefinitely.

They definitely need to be recruited into a uniformed militia to ensure they are entitled to be treated as PoW if captured.

Yeah yeah it's the same old made up lies coming from Moscow. Ukrainians crucify babies and attempt to suicide bomb refugee caravans of women and children... there's just no limit to the grotesque and obscene depths they will go to paint their enemies as evil scum.

Not just US terms. It's literally the international law on the subject. Codified in the Geneva Conventions and other widely-agreed upon rules of ethical warfare.

Why has Steve Doocy, co-host of Fox and Friends at least twice in as many days, talked about the idea of Russian special forces combing the streets of Kyiv to hunt down and execute or place on trial, President Zelenskyy?
He sounds almost gleeful at the idea

Because he is?

It's 50/50 Zelensky survives this, no matter what he does. And he knows it.

Oh I have no doubt of that.

But as others have said, I think Putin is losing his grip on sanity and unlike the former communist party or the NATO systems I'm not sure if there is anyone able to stop him when he decides that if he won't win, then no-one will win.

I don't think anyone needs to stop him. It's not like he's going to lace up his secret Soviet superweapon and personally go kick Ukraine's ass unless someone holds him back.

This whole thing is happening because there's a hierarchy of people who are still willing to do stuff just because Putin tells them to. This whole thing falls apart the moment enough of them decide to just go full Bartleby the Scrivener instead.

Since they have air superiority, I was sure the Russians would roll over the Ukranians. Yes, the Ukranians would put up a brave fight, but wouldn't be able to stand up against the Russian military machine.

But it's the second day of the invasion, and the Russians haven't made any notable advances.

And in some areas, the Ukrainians are more than holding their own.

If reports are to be believed, Russian losses are much higher than the Ukrainians.

Trying to show strength, I think Putin has just showed how weak Russia actually is.

Pretty sure what they were getting at was that Putin may just decide to nuke things.

Also hard to do if your hierarchy is in a "I would prefer not to" mood already.

(In theory, the US president can reach for the Football and trigger a nuclear strike any time he wants. But the reality is that there's a days or weeks-long buildup to that kind of scenario. The President is already in an undisclosed location, with continuity of government already provided for, his closest advisors at his side, considering from hour to hour if now is going to be the moment of truth. If the president just got up in the middle of the night and summoned the Marine outside his door so he could nuke Iran "just because", I think the Marine would probably balk, and a lot of people would come running to the Residence wing real quick to stand between the president and whatever nightmare had suddenly gripped him. Putin's probably facing a similar situation right now.)

The daughter of Putin's Kremlin spokesman posted an antiwar message on her website. It has been taken down, but still interesting.

Link?

I think Putin has about a 20% chance of getting himself deposed as a result of this.

Because it could actually backfire amongst his lieutenants .

Really wish everyone could huddle up and agree on a spelling and pronunciation for Kiev.

"The short answer is simple: Ukrainians call their capital “Kyiv” (kee-yiv), the spelling, a transliteration of the Ukrainian Київ. The Russian version is “Kiev” (kee-yev)."

from The Guardian

I have followed this thread from the beginning and must say that the tankies are making a pretty lame showing of it.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that whatever the disagreements were regarding NATO and the violent problems in the east, this action in Ukraine is totally insane and completely disproportionate to what they are trying to resolve
