Merged Catholic Priest uses wrong word in baptism invalidates decades of baptisms

So wait I wasn't do Baptisms the right way when I was just holding the kids underwater yelling "Talk! Talk you little bastards!"

Wait no that was waterboarding. I always get those two mixed up.

I was wondering What Would Jesus Do, as such people are wont to ask.

My guess would be that he'd say something along the lines of 'Sorry, administrative screw-up there, it's all good'.

But the spell won't work if you say it wrong!

******* seriously, man? I specifically recall each and every baptism I've ever seen using the first person singular.

Whelp, I was going to hell anyway. More company, I guess.

Were they Catholic baptisms though?

Of course baptism is the one sacrament that can be performed by anyone (you do not have to be catholic, you do have to be baptised). I have a friend who is a neonatologist who regularly does quick baptisms, pending the arrival of a priest. Her worry has always been that she might get thrown of her protestant church if they knew how many catholics she had baptised.

So none of them that she baptised were Catholic? she had baptised them in to her church?

I don't think they would count to a Catholic priest.

I’m surprised that they can’t roll a twelve and cast the “auto baptise” spell get the Pope to do some mumbo-jumbo to change the past.

Some things are too important to pencil whip. Not widespread sex abuse, that's easy to quietly clean up, but making sure that everyone knows that the priests have a special license on god powers is very important.

The Priest in question said, during the Rites, "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." instead of "correct" wording of "We baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

The rub, as it were, is that the Priest isn't the one doing the baptizing, Jesus is, so by saying "I" instead of "We" he baptized the babies, not Jesus.

Basically linguistically he was taking credit for the Baptism, not doing it in Jesus's name.

t’other way around he said “We” instead of “I”. And that makes all the difference…..

Strictly speaking Canon law does allow for a non-priest or even someone who does not believe in Christ, and as a complete shocker even a woman!! But that is only meant for an emergency. (I’m assuming the baptisms Plaingale’s colleague undertakes are on babies very unwell and likely to die.)

Mostly, yes. All three of my kids and bunches of nieces and nephews. The Protestant ones I grew up with were full submersion with the pastor screaming "I BAPTIZE YOU IN THE NAME OF CHRIST JESUS". Bit terrifying.

Yeah, if a supernatural being is presiding (if conspicuously undetectable), shouldn't the priest say "He" or "It" baptizes you? Pretty presumptuous to cut himself in on the credits.

^ This. As someone with a Protestant background, it's quite clear from the New Testament that all believers have direct access to God. A God who is powerful enough to create this entire universe (power that becomes greater as we find more and more of the universe) doesn't need humans (priests) or institutions (a church—any church) between him and his creation.

It's not like your dog needs your cat's permission to come to you and seek to be petted, as much as the cat would like to think that's the case.

As I mentioned, there is the doctrine of Baptism of Desire.

As I mentioned on the other thread after arthwollipot kindly posted the same article:

"Ahh ..... those Catholics can get into a tizz about the silliest things. How many years after Jesus was supposedly strutting his stuff, was it until the "One True Church", came up with the correct wording? What words did John The Baptist use I wonder."

"You want me do do what now?"

Well it's quite obvious what has to happen now.

Francis has to sit himself in that special chair and make a statement ex cathedra. Given he has the right to loose/bind stuff on Earth and it will be loosed/bound in heaven, he can decree that the "I or We" thing can be OK either way.

This will be a good test for Francis, to see if he is up to the job.
