Whoopi Goldberg suspended from “The View”…

Okay the definition war has gone on long enough.

What point was Whoopi trying to make with her statement? What was she trying to say?
What she said. Man's inhumanity to man. People can go psycho murderer on "the other" for many reasons. One being "race".

That was the concept for one of Gulliver's travels. Which end of your hard boiled egg do you eat?

I agree with this in general, and I think if she had said what you did, she'd have been in the clear. You can easily see race, or false ideas about race, as a subset of the reasons for ideas of otherness, and thus for inhumanity. Her mistake was to deny the subset.

She specifically described is white on white violence. She wasn't talking about man's inhumanity to man. She was talking about white on white violence and how it is qualitatively less bad than white on black violence.
It may be that she just isn't so bothered by intra-racial violence? I did wonder when I heard it whether she was edging in the direction of the holocaust just being a case of white people doing white people ****.

She's got every right to be.

I hate when people use that term, the "right" to be upset, like the "right" to have an opinion. Of course everybody has the "right," that's meaningless.

Gina Carano wasn't asked back to do a minor role in one show. Whoopi Goldberg is being suspended from a long-running and successful show she's long been a part of.

Yes, there's a double standard. Maybe think of that the next time you're asked to stop being an idiot and can't. Diarrhea of the mouth isn't covered by anybody's health insurance, sweetheart.

Guess what, the regional VP of the company I work for gets away with more than a ground-level schlub like myself. I don't ignore the rules, just so I can get fired and complain that they like him better than me.

Personally, I don't think either one should be fired, but I'm neither an executive at Disney nor a shareholder, so my opinion doesn't mean ****.

Because all the people who are wrong can do anymore, try to make the argument about "their right to be wrong" as if that's the same thing or means anything or isn't just a stupid attempt at a stupid hijack away from their wrongness.

It's a bit early to say there's a double standard. If Goldberg refuses to take her lumps graciously and insists on being a braying jack-ass after being explicitly cautioned by her employers, then it's a comparable incident to Carano.

Carano was not fired for a single flippant remark.

Its dumb, both her original statement and the reaction to it. Her original statement, mostly because it was inarticulate and a distinction with out difference. The reaction, does anyone really care? As noted by others, she wasn't saying, "it wasn't about race, so its not that bad." I do wonder why she felt is was necessary to say at all though, but then I remember, who really cares?

…for two weeks for saying The Holocaust was “not about race”.

My response to a Twitter thread on the topic…

I was born and raised a Jew, and don’t get the outrage. I don’t see myself as being a separate “race”, and I think biologists in general agree that “race” is a nebulous concept. Seems like much ado about very, very little, with no slight intended by Whoopi.‬”

Thoughts?
To the Nazis it was about race. Jews, blacks, slavs, etc were considered an inferior "race". They were wrong of course. Whoopi Goldberg should have known better.

It also seems that Goldberg was not claiming some trivial inconvenience was the same as the holocaust.

They also have very different jobs.

Goldberg is on a talking heads show and part of her job is to crank of faux-controversies with her co-hosts to gin up entertaining (to some) flame wars. It stands to reason these people will occasionally cross the line from provocative into outright bad taste and need to get steered back into bounds.

Carano was a character actor on a TV show. Her employer does not want her off-screen personality to distract audiences from enjoying a action-adventure space show.

One is clearly an editorial/opinion type job, the other is just an actor meant to play a role.

That's a little too close to "But it's her job to sometimes be wrong!" for my taste.

It is to mine too, but I don't enjoy the program.

It's not an excuse for bad behavior, simply an explanation for the motives of the people who have the power to fire Goldberg.

The other obvious element is that Goldberg has way more star power than Carano, who was a minor character actor in a popular show.

The other thing is that Goldberg is a minority. Look at the Nick Cannon situation.

Carano played a popular minor character in a popular show and was on the verge of starring in a spinoff show. Because of her popularity, Disney gave her a lot of rope and she chose to hang her career with it. It's a shame because I liked her character and her acting was improving.

Verge is probably a bit strong for the stage that show was in.

I think it's the right word. There were no contracts signed or preproduction but the word was definitely on the proverbial street. Given the speed with which Disney+ has been turning out shows, it could have already had its first season.

In any case, her future looked a lot brighter than starring in made-for-OAN movies.

Then let me clarify: she is correct that there is a double standard, and she's on the short end of it.

Gina Carano wasn't asked back to do a minor role in one show.

No. First off, her role in The Mandalorian was not minor, it was probably the biggest role besides the title character and baby Yoda (who has no actor). Furthermore, Carano was set to have a leading role in Rangers of the New Republic. She lost that role too.

Personally, I don't think either one should be fired

I agree (sort of - Goldberg should be fired because all the hosts should be fired, the show is garbage and should be taken off the air, but I know that won't happen). But as I said before, the only thing worse than a bad rule is a bad rule that's inconsistently applied.

but I'm neither an executive at Disney nor a shareholder, so my opinion doesn't mean ****.

If you are a potential Disney customer, then your opinion means something. But yes, individually what you and I think doesn't count for much, that is true.
