Oh some of them are liars. Some of them are willfully ignorant but there are a bunch of them who are just stupid too.

I’m sorry, but you didn’t pay attention. Some of them were very clear about their means to success: kill Pence, kill Pelosi, kill whoever else to stop the certification. No certification, no electoral vote, and Trump is still president.

That is both a viable threat to those in power and a plan for success. Just because there are massive holes in their plan, doesn’t mean that they, at least some of them, weren’t entirely serious about it and believed it would work. Moreover, as has been pointed out, all this played into Trump’s plan to overthrow a legitimate election. All of that equals an attempted coup.
 
I still maintain there's a lot of hay to find in the thin security (despite Intel indicating need for more) and hours-long delays in NG activation (despite units able to deploy and clear in 45 minutes once allowed).

The failure of the coup attempt lies with Trump for watching the chaos on TV rather than declaring national emergency. Once again, his instinct to just bask in adoration and attention ranked higher than seizing the moment.

He puts more effort into image than substance. He puts thought and time into schemes like pretending to be someone else calling a reporter to claim his net worth is more than it is so he can be ranked higher on a list instead of making calls and thinking hard how to actually earn more money.
 
It was an ATTEMPTED coup. Anyone who can't see that is being willfully blind. Everything is 'attempted' until it succeeds. If those yahoos could have stopped the vote to certify the election, they'd have done so.
 
Treason never prospers etc.
The next plotters are going to make sure they win and will avoid sanctions and prison that way.
I doubt many will have been scared off: they came closer than anyone would have thought possible.
 
People referring to this as a coup almost makes one yearn for the real thing. It seems like the only way for some to gain perspective. So much hyperbole in this thread.

Most seem to call the event the "Capitol Riot".

Of course, we need to ramp it up a few notches here at the "Skeptics" forum.

I guess if there is ever a real coup, we will have to call it a "Super-Platinum Extra Deluxe Coup", around here.
 
While others minimize it. Next thing you know, it'll just be a protest rally that was full of love, so much love like you've never seen before and they acted like typical tourists. Oh, wait.....

Just because the attempt to overturn the election result, storm the Capitol and hang the Vice President was poorly organised and on this occasion didn't succeed, doesn't mean that it wasn't a coup attempt.

Rest assured that lessons have been learned and the same mistakes won't be made next time. :(

Nit - not everything. Obstruction of Justice comes to mind. There is no attempted obstruction of justice. Attempting it without success IS obstruction of justice.

I can not count how many times woo’s have come to this board with the “If you were REAL skeptics, you’d agree with my opinion” argument on their lips. I also can not remember a time when they were able to support their opinion in any coherent or self-consistent manner.

So, feel free to break it down for us and teach these dumb skeptics how it is, or else slink back under a rock with your tail between your legs: How was this coup attempt NOT a coup attempt and what would be needed to have made it a coup attempt?

I'd add conspiracy to that list. You can't attempt conspiracy because it requires two or more persons to discuss or plan to say, storm the Capitol and an affirmative act. So if you met and talked about storming the Capitol and then took a guided tour to do a recon, you've committed conspiracy even if you never actually storm the Capitol.

What stands out to me is how close the “protest rally” - or “riot” - came to having far more dire consequences.

Imagine if Pence had been caught and hung, if Pelosi had been shot “in her brain”, if AOC and other progressive Democrats had been killed or taken hostage and held on the floor of Congress - there were certainly enough zip-ties and weapons and statements to show both intent and capability. Consider the aftermath, the possibility of a military assault on the Capitol, the immediate need for elections to fill seats, the nullification of the 2020 election, and calls calls for Martial Law and Emergency Powers by Trump. And so on…

The fact that it was a disorganized mess, if anything, makes it worse.
