They've been married too long for Trump to totally screw her over. FL is an equitable property state like most states. She'd come out with plenty as long as Trump wasn't broke.

Easily overcome by a death-bed potlatch, then. But more mean-spirited.

Looking forward to that one time in our lives we're all cheering for the lawyers.

Well, half the lawyers anyway.

Do they pass on debts as well as assets? And do you think Pootie would try to bribe her like he did with Donny?

My limited experience indicates that when an estate goes into probate, there is a time period when creditors can make a claim against the estate. None of this was instantaneous. There are several lawyers on here who can answer better than I can I'm sure.

Not a lawyer and not in the US so any opinion I offer has little basis in fact but.....

IMO one of the key difficulties would be to disentangle Donald Trump's personal wealth (or debt) from the wealth (or debt) of the companies that he and his family own.

His reputation may be sufficiently poor that he may have had to personally provide collateral for business loans but typically there would be a big firewall in place so as to ensure that the Trump family are as insulated as possible from the vagaries of the business cycle, bad luck and incompetence.

That requires the person to acknowledge his impending death, though. I somehow suspect that T****'s dying breath will be a claim that he's the healthiest man alive.

e.t.a. although there is an element of the potlatch that sounds very a propos. I recall long ago someone mentioning that in the potlatch culture, the stakes became so high and so impoverishing, that leaders began to exchange things they did not possess and knew they never could - i.e. more canoes than one actually owns, essentially unbacked paper. I don't know how true that is, but it sounds like the kind of potlatch we'd get.

Yeah, potlatches became so over-the-top that the Canadian government tried to ban them at one point, because far too much wealth was just being destroyed, and people left impoverished.

Another option I thought of later - Trump could officially move his residence to a state that lets him screw his spouse in the will, with telling Melania about it.

Again, most petty man in history.

Bit of a problem for Melania. She has no choice but to hang in to get her payoff.

Today's insane screed from Donald J. Trump, Lunatic:

The Unselect Committee of politically ambitious hacks continues to subpoena people wanting to know about those protesting, on January 6th, the insurrection which took place during the Presidential Election of November 3rd. There is so much proof, but the Fake News Media refuses to print it or show it in any way, shape, or form. Just read the findings of the Arizona report, or look at what’s happening in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and numerous other States. That’s right, the Committee is studying the PROTEST when it should be studying the Fraudulent Election that led to the protest. As the LameStream Media knows, the facts are there for all to see!

Did he just call the Jan 6 riot an "insurrection'" or the Nov. 3 elections an "insurrection"?
Crappy writing.

Once again, King Bloatus of Orange had nothing to do with composing that message. It's fully correct punctuation and spelling, has complex sentences, and is WAY more than his 160-character thought buffer. The nearest he probably got to it was having a flunky read it aloud to him while he chowed down on fried chicken, before waving his fat paw in acceptance it could be published.

As for the content... :dl: It's aimed at his base, not us.

I don't think that this would be easy either. She is going to have to deal with his sprogs who will lawyer up and pounce on her and then each other to get the biggest slice of whatever is left of that cake. It will be a free for all in which the ultimate winners will be a bunch of lawyers.

Observing Trump's body of work so far, his will will be some version of a "death match" woth the last man standing getting what is left.

Which will be the combined invoices from the lawyers.

The additional subpoenas that trump is referring to include those for Jason Miller and Kayleigh McEnany. Link.

“In the days before the January 6 attack, the former president’s closest allies and advisers drove a campaign of misinformation about the election and planned ways to stop the count of Electoral College votes. (This committee) need to know every detail about their efforts to overturn the election, including who they were talking to the White House and in Congress, what connections they had with rallies that escalated into a riot, and who paid for it all”
Bennie Thompson (D), chairman of the committee.

Also from that article, the DC federal judge has denied trump's bid to withhold WH information from the Jan 6 committee on the basis of executive privilege, a decision which trump has appealed. It's moving quickly though.

A Jarndyce and Jarndyce situation. ;)

As I've mentioned upthread there'll be a lot of complexity separating Donald Trump's personal wealth (or debts) from the wealth (or debts) of the businesses which are owned by the family. IMO it'll be particularly difficult in this case because Donald Trump seems to treat business assets as personal possessions.

I wouldn't be shocked to find out that the net worth of the individuals and businesses are significantly lower than expected (and orders of magnitude lower than claimed) and that the Trumps have tried to insulate their personal wealth by transferring debt to their companies. After Donald Trump's death, the companies may go under but the family will attempt to cling to their personal wealth.

Arrangements made back when they could afford, and were willing to pay, good lawyers will prove to be solid, later arrangements will likely be very flaky indeed. It's been repeatedly claimed that Donald Trump has been using personal wealth to prop up his failing businesses and that recently the personal has been the result of money laundering and/or taking bribes. That income stream will dry up in the event of his death and will have an effect on the businesses.

Hopefully it keeps moving quickly through the courts.

The pessimist in me can see it getting to the supreme court where they decide to sit on it for a year, then claim the issue is moot if the committee is done its work already by the time they issue their ruling.

Some mixed news in the courts for Stubby McBonespurs...

From: ABC News
The Trump Organization secured a partial victory on Monday as a Washington, D.C., superior court judge dismissed a portion of a lawsuit brought by the D.C. attorney general over actions by former President Donald Trump's 2017 Presidential Inaugural Committee. The judge dismissed a claim by D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine that Trump's inaugural committee "wasted" $1 million in rented ballrooms at Trump's Washington, D.C., hotel, writing that they have not met the standard of proof that would allow that part of the lawsuit to proceed....But López did allow the case to proceed, in part, on the claim of "private inurement" -- the question of whether the inaugural committee used their funds for private benefit and not for nonprofit purposes -- which means the case could proceed to trial.

I would like to see Trump hit with as many lawsuits as possible, so glad this one is at least partly proceeding.
