Man, Alabama can't catch a break. It is bad enough having this loony who had to be removed from the bench for breaking the law, now he is running for governor, and he's got a chance to win.

This article tells about his platform.
Judge Moore's five points include: Legislative reform;
Education changes;
Tax and spending reductions;
A crackdown on illegal immigration; and
The centerpiece of the former state chief justice's political platform, preserving our moral heritage.

The article points out that that last plank is unconstitutional, as he wants to "defend the right of every person to include teachers, judges, and state, county and municipal offices to publicly acknowledge God as the moral foundation of law, liberty and government."

Right now he is in about 3rd or 4th place in most polls, but it's too close to be certain that Alabama won't once again be embarassed by having a moron for governor. The only difference this time is that it would be a convicted moron.

I would like to know what his Education Changes would entail. That could be a hoot!

I read somewhere that his pals seem to be Christian Reconstructionists. Yeah, the scary ones. Is that true?

Sounds like code for teaching ID to me.

Nah, down here they don't use no namby=pamby ID--it's by-the-book (you know which book) Creationism all the way.

According to the Alabama papers, he's got a chance, but only if he can get the Religious Right folks to go for him (and campaign for him) en masse. Problem he's got is that the current Governor isn't exactly a flamin' liberal and will probably move to the right to counter ol' Roy.

Probably should have gone smaller, like Alabama Chief Justice (an elected position) or run for the House of Representatives (probably could find a district with a 'too-liberal- Republican in it). He might have made it then.

But an electorate that voted to keep racist language in the Alabama Constitution because some thought it might lead to higher school taxes does not bode well for making election predictions. All depends on how much LA (that's Lower Alabama, y'all) gets on the Moore bandwagon.

Going to be an interesting 2006...

Moore for Governor!

Is not smacking your slaves around too much part of the "preserving our moral heritage" for the Alabama electorate?

Charlie (is he related to Dinty or Michael Moore?) Monoxide

He already was the Chief Justice. He was removed for breaking the law.

President Robert Riley

Has a nice ring to it.

This man is not in anyone's pockets, is honestly fair, and has a great stage presence.

The Republicans couldn't do better than recruit this man in '08.
A breath of fresh air.

I juts love one candidate's name - Luthor Strange... Jerry Speigelman and Bob Kane couldn't have thought of a better one!

Ummm, I'm not so sure--this is Alabama, after all, ALL politicians are in somebodys' pockets.

And Riley did defned Moore and the 10 Commandments display until the Federal Court ruling, that was when he split.

Still, he could be a dark horse if the more conservative wing of the Repubs simply refuse to abide the idea of a McCain nomination.

We shall see.

edited to add--even more notable, several candidates for the Alabama Supreme court (yes, they are elected here and not appointed) who were known to back Judge Moore got beat. So his coattails weren't very long, except in carrying others to defeat.

Oh, I'm so adding that to my list of fake internet names.

eta: It can replace "John Locke" which has re-entered popular recognition. Thank you very much, Lost.
