Tucker Carlson in Hungary

Actually, it's dropping the first part the causes the problems.

But, you're right that it is more nuanced than some present. He wasn't saying that the country is always right; he was merely toasting it and expressing his loyalty to and love of it.

I didn't even know there was a real story behind the saying. Thanks for that. :)

I was actually thinking of a different quote, from Carl Schurz:

“My country, right or wrong; when right, to keep her right; when wrong, to put her right.”

I'd never heard that one before. I like it.

Me too, it’s the one that makes the most sense to me. It was actually in response to the abbreviated version, as well.

This bears posting from you link:
I confidently trust that the American people will prove themselves … too wise not to detect the false pride or the dangerous ambitions or the selfish schemes which so often hide themselves under that deceptive cry of mock patriotism: ‘Our country, right or wrong!’ They will not fail to recognize that our dignity, our free institutions and the peace and welfare of this and coming generations of Americans will be secure only as we cling to the watchword of true patriotism: ‘Our country—when right to be kept right; when wrong to be put right.’”—Schurz, “The Policy of Imperialism,”

Sadly, his trust that Americans would be 'too wise' would be misplaced with many Americans today. Trump has no patriotism as he loves nothing but himself. This "MAGA" crap is about as much 'mock patriotism' as there is.

This is how Fox presents Carlson's disgusting hand kissing of Orban:

The comments from Fox viewers show just how much they like authoritarianism. Somehow, authoritarianism equates to more 'freedom' in their minds. But that 'freedom' seems to revolve around anti-immigration, non-diversity (aka racism), and Christianity. And, of course, there are the expected "Biden has dementia" claims.

The supporters of this kind of "freedom for me, but not for thee" should get in touch with history. Eventually the descent to hell impacts them once the existing 'other' is dealt with. Everyone except the elite few--actually, some of them, too--ultimately suffers.

They want freedom for people of the right skin color and right religion, no liberty for anybody else.
That so many Americans have succembed to the appeal of Autoratarnism is another reason why I am pessmisitic about avoiding a lot of bloodshed in the US.

They fail to realise that when freedoms are taken away, it's usually not to the benefit of the common man.

Yuck. Kissing up to dictators. I prefer how Juncker treats Orban:

The 2020 Census explains it all. Nervous whites need a shift to authoritarianism to stay in power. Carlson likely understands this too. In ten years, we will likely be a majority minority country. The only way the current distribution of wealth and political power (as if those are different) can remain is a Hungarian type solution.

"Heil Hitler!" has a rhythm and, importantly, it alliterates.

But "Heil Carlson"? Nuh uh.

So we don't need to worry, right?

I just can't get over the fact that ANYONE thinks his slack-jawed puzzled-puppy face during interviews is somehow indicative of his intellectual prowess. Did he practice this and decide it was impressive to the viewers? He may be educated, but he's really just a jackboot-licker.
