Television coverage of the Apollo 11 liftoff

52 years ago today, Apollo 11 with its three astronauts lifted off for its journey to the Moon. You can watch the CBS News special coverage with Walter Cronkite (and the original advertisements too) below.

Someone on the broadcast told viewers the best camera settings for taking photographs of the screen. I remember balancing an old Argus C3 on an aluminum vacuum cleaner pipe and getting several good shots of Armstrong coming down the ladder. I still have those as slides somewhere.

My girlfriend at the time (now my wife) came to my apartment to watch the landing on my TV which promptly suffered some catastrophic internal short. So we took the subway to Toronto City Hall where we watched the landing on a "large" screen (6-foot I would guess) along with a few hundred other people. I couldn't hear the sound but the fuzzy, black-and-white "first step" is still burned in my memory these decades later.

One of my earliest memories is of wathcing Apollo 11 when I was 6 years old.

My most clear memory (I've posted this before) was standing outside our cars at a drive-in movie (common in SoCal) looking at the full Moon and my friend Carl pointing up to the Moon saying those guys were walking around up there. I can still see it in my head though maybe there are some issue with how our memories work.

But somethings that are big, I think we do remember the details of.
