........... CHUD "tourists" ............

I don't like these folks either, but I haven't seen any evidence that they are cannibals who live underground.

Haye you seen any evidence they aren't? That's the sort of standard of proof they accept.

They certainly have a lot of characteristics in common.

Well, they were terrorists attempting to overthrow the U.S. government...

How about we use the term 'tourorists'?

Sure, but they did it above ground and didn't eat anyone as far as we know.

C.H.U.D.

C.H.U.D. is a 1984 American science fiction horror film directed by Douglas Cheek, produced by Andrew Bonime, and starring John Heard, Daniel Stern, and Christopher Curry in his film debut. The plot concerns a New York City police officer and a homeless shelter manager who join forces to investigate a series of disappearances, and discover that the missing people have been hunted down by humanoid monsters that live below the city.

The title of the movie stands for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers.

Sure it is. A judge can simply issue a gag order.

I can't find much to suggest this is ever done, nor that it would be constitutional to do so. The American system is very particular about the use of prior restraint of speech. I can't find any examples where gag orders are issued for settled cases.

Woman who made a big show of regret, which seemed to play a significant role in receiving only a probation sentence, is now on Fox News downplaying the severity of her crimes post-conviction. Much was written about how this was the model defendant in the case because she was showing so much sincere remorse, now she's on fascist cable begging for sympathy.

There should be no mitigating circumstances for assaulting democracy itself.

Prison authorities can deny media access for any prisoner, and a prisoner on parole is still serving their sentence, so that prisoner can still be prevented from speaking to anyone the parole board don't want them talking to.

If they can be ordered not to associate and/or speak with other members of, say, their former gang or other criminal accociates (which on its face, would seem to violate their constitutional right to free association) I see no reason that could not be extended to the media.

Talk about throwing a lenient sentence into a judge's face. Probably going to make things more difficult for CHUD "tourists" who have yet to be sentenced.

Well, she is still on probation... I hope the judge hears about it.

Likely, for those that didn't destroy anything or attempt to harm anyone.

...and honestly, that's fine with me. I don't see any need to jail people that just wandered over because "Trump told me so", and just stood their with their mouths open.

Meanwhile, here's a group that protested actual voter suppression, led by revs William Barber 2 and Al Sharpton, the group tried to meet with Jim Crow McConnell and Joe Manchin, and after held a standard, nonviolent rally. It sounds like many of the leaders were technically arrested, but this just meant that they were held until everyone was issued tickets and then let go.

Personally, I'm very concerned by this contrast in behavior, and I blame the white fathers for not raising their sons properly.:D

"Spare The Commons, Hang The Lords" has been the SOP in dealing with revolts since the middle ages.

I'm pretty sure it's done all the time usually as a condition of probation or parole.

I've already complained about that term. My arguments were considered unconvincing. I predict that yours will be too.

I even proposed an alternate term ("Redcaps"), but that didn't catch on. Not only do they literally wear red caps, but the Redcaps of Celtic mythology are vicious little goblins that soak their hats in the blood of their enemies. So I thought it was an appropriate analogy.

I liked it too, but sadly Red Cap service is/was a luggage carrying service for train lines in the USA. This in itself is no big deal except that in the segregation era it was one of the few jobs blacks could get and was almost exclusively positioned by them. So it becomes a bit problematic.

[off topic] - to address these two posts

Here's the thing..... you're both being too literal. It is not uncommon in language for terms to get hijacked to mean something different from the original meaning.

"Gay" used to mean bright and/or happy.
"Queer" used to mean strange, peculiar, odd or eccentric.
"Naughty" used to mean you had nothing, i.e. naught.
"Egregious" once meant you were distinguished or eminent.

But as far as pejoratives go, it gets even worse, and the things people call each other are not always to be taken as the literal meaning of what was said. When one person calls another person a ...

• dickhead, they are not usually saying that person has head like a penis.
• nutbar, they are not usually saying that person is a piece of confectionery.
• dipstick, they are not usually saying that person is a thin metal device for measuring the oil level in your car.
• ************, they are not usually saying that person has sex with their own mother.

And especially for Arth

• Galah, they are not usually saying that person is a pink parrot

In any case, "chud" is now officially in the wiktionary as...

"(US, slang) A gross, physically unappealing person, more recently used by people as an epithet for those perceived to be on the political right."

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/chud

There will be no stopping it now

Feel free to ignore me or Google it yourself.

I wasn't being glib. I tired googling and can't find any example of prior restraint for media access being used as a probation condition.

Hell, famous greaseball Michael Cohen even successfully sued the Bureau of Prisons because they tried to say he couldn't publish his book while on house arrest, and the government conceded the point rather than risk taking it to court.

Can you find any examples of such a broad-sweeping order for a con on probation not to talk to media? I can't.

Here's someone who argues that today's right-wing was born in the aftermath of the Vietnam War.
The grievances and conspiracy theories that took shape after the war in Vietnam had a lot in common with the Lost Cause mythology of the Confederacy, and even more with the Dolchstoss, the “stab in the back” theory that sought to explain Germany’s defeat in World War I and contributed mightily to the rise of the Nazis. The task the most extreme conservatives set themselves after Vietnam was to identify the enemies within and root them out by any means necessary. In this scenario, military veterans, with their patriotism, their discipline, their mastery of arms, and the backing of the Second Amendment, were uniquely placed to take up the challenge.

There's an excellent book on the role disaffected vets from pointless wars play into right wing extremist movements. Kathleen Belew's "Bring the War Home" talks at length about the role jaded Vietnam vets played in the white nationalist and militia extremists that were so common in the 80's and 90's.

I don't think it's a coincidence that our current spike in far-right, militia type extremism is taking place in the wake of decades of failed "war of terror" adventures.

Oathkeeper Mark Grods is snitching on his comrades. Claims to have brought firearms as part of larger conspiracy to attack the capitol, but these remained behind in a hotel as the group did not want to risk being stopped by cops prior to the assault.

A Donald Trump supporter who teamed up with members of the Oath Keepers to storm the U.S. Capitol building has testified before a grand jury and reached a plea deal with federal prosecutors in which he admits he entered into a conspiracy to obstruct the Jan. 6 certification of Joe Biden’s Electoral College win.

Mark Grods, according to a criminal information filed ahead of his plea agreement hearing on Wednesday afternoon, will admit he was part of a military “stack” formation and entered the Capitol building carrying a large stick on Jan. 6. Grods will admit that he brought firearms to Washington, D.C., and “eventually provided them to another individual to store in a Virginia hotel.” (Trump supporters wanted to bring weapons to the Capitol on Jan. 6, but were worried they’d be stopped by law enforcement before they reached the Capitol under D.C. gun laws.)
