Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 27

It continues to astonish me that we haven't heard any tapes from meetings in the White House. Apparently WH staffers weren't allowed to bring phones into meetings, but unless the Secret Service was actually wanding people, it would have been easy to smuggle in some kind of pocket recorder.

I'm pretty sure that would constitute a felony.
Visitors and employees entering the West Wing pass through a security entrance which includes metal detectors. Any phone today usually includes a recording app so they might be able to turn on a phone theoretically. But even that may be impossible difficult today.

D.C. is a "one-party consent" state (not really a state, but that's a different discussion). That means that if one party knows a recorder is in use, it's legal.

I dunno whether all electronics are prohibited. This says personal devices are banned. But they all get government phones. And you don't need a phone to record a meeting. I doubt that such a rule -- not a law -- would be hard to circumvent if someone wanted to.

From the link:
Ms. Manigault Newman explained to Chuck Todd, the host of “Meet the Press,” that she recorded that conversation, as well as others that she has played for reporters and book publishers featuring her conversations with Mr. Trump, because “this is a White House where everybody lies.”

The fact that she's never been charged with anything should answer the question of whether it's actionable. it also supports my notion that others could have made tapes.

I agree. If those tapes were negative and the people who had them didn't want Trump re-elected, they would have come out before the 2020 election...just like they did before the 2016 election.

All can say is...HA HA!

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/05/27/trump-payroll-tax-deferral-491017

Basically...
- Trump (without congressional approval) tried to bring in a program to stimulate the economy during covid by allowing payroll taxes to be deferred
- most employers did not partake (because they realized many employees would end up stuck once the tax bill was due and they couldn't cover it)
- members of the trump admin DID have their taxes deferred, along with vague promises that the taxes would eventually be forgotten about
- Trump lost re-election, the tax bill is now due for former trump admin workers, and many are complaining

Not much sympathy for people who voluntarily decided to work for a racist con artist and found broken promises as a result.

There are also a lot of federal employees who didn't have a choice and had the taxes deferred. These weren't administration people, just career civil servants.

In these turbulent times, we all need a feel good story now and then.

President Donald Trump is now upset with his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani and has instructed aides not to pay him his legal fees, The Washington Post reported and The New York Times confirmed.

Oh. I am shocked. Just shocked I tell you. Why do some of these bozos think that they will be different, and of course he will pay them.

So employees were surprised to have leopards eat their faces after voting for and working for the Leopards-Eating-People’s-Faces Party.

The important thing to remember is that we were told that the Republican party is united...

From: The Guardian
The 10 Republican House representatives who voted to impeach Donald Trump are all being targeted by a well-funded new political group largely funded by supporters of the former president....“Remove the 10 pretenders,” the group’s website states.

It's a 'big tent party that welcomes everyone according to Kevin McCarthy:

"We are a big tent party. We represent Americans of all backgrounds and continue to grow our movement by the day. And unlike the left, we embrace free thought and debate. All members are elected to represent their constituents as they see fit, but our leadership team cannot afford to be distracted from the important work we were elected to do and the shared goals we hope to achieve."

Sounds more to me like they're gathering all those who don't toe the party line into that 'big tent' in order to take them out.
