The *purpose* was almost certain to be based on hunting down leakers. I can't comment on specific claimed probable cause, though, or add information about any of the rest.
I would say the “stated purpose”.

It's just been revealed that Bill Barr's DOJ secretly obtained two month's (June/July 2017) worth of CNN reporter Barbara Starr's personal home and cell phones and email records. She was just informed of this recently by letter. This was the second time that a reporter's records were secretly obtained who worked for an organization that Trump considered a 'fake news enemy', the other being the WAPO in 2017.
Are you forgetting that CNN, The New York Times, MSNBC, etc. are enemies of the people? And then the GOP voters are worried about Democrats becoming tyrants?

And of course T**** has to fall in love with the very worst of these so-called Commie leaders, and the last remaining Stalinist dictatorship on Earth. So suddenly they get the thumbs-up from the GOP.Republicans are only attracted to autocrats if they are right wing autocrats. Those are good autocrats. Otherwise they are commie Chinese or commie Cuban autocrats. Those are bad autocrats. Used to be bad commie N. Korean autocrats until Trump suddenly fell in love. They seem to be OK commie autocrats now. No dissonance there at all.
I wonder if the AZ Senate understands that the Maricopa County election board is very clearly and publicly documenting that they ran an election according to all legal duties, and that it's actually Cyber Ninjas, and likely anyone who is paying them, that's repeatedly violating the law i and yet the latter group has repeatedly, without cause, accused the former of acting illegally.
Going on recent form by the owners of the machines, that should cost them only...ooh, let's see...$1.4 billion??Heck, now that the machines can't be certified again. I'd use those violations as the basis for a suit to have Cyber Ninjas and those financing them to pay for replacements.
The job they were hired for was to conduct a fake audit then declare Trump to be the rightful president. I have no doubt they are competent to achieve that and to cash the check they will receive for doing so.Cyber Ninjas: Inept As Those Who Hire Us! If you want a job done half-assed, then we're the guys for you!

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/el...on-audit-backtracks-deleted-database-n1267900The private firm overseeing the audit, Cyber Ninjas, said counting nearly 2.1 million ballots would take 20 days. After more than three weeks of counting, the auditors said they needed another six weeks, after counting less than half a million ballots. After more than three weeks of counting, the auditors said they needed another six weeks, after counting less than half a million ballots. The audit is currently on a break, though, because the Veterans Memorial Coliseum arena where the audit has so far taken place was hosting high school graduations this week. Counting will pick up again next week and run through the end of June, according to the auditors.
That delay could cost taxpayers an additional $1,000 a day — as much as $42,000 — in air conditioning and operational expenses, Ken Bennett, the Senate’s audit liaison and a former Republican secretary of state, told NBC News last week.
Senate Republicans have already agreed to pay Cyber Ninjas $150,000 for the audit.
But that amount barely scratches the surface of the real price, according to Bennett. The entire Cyber Ninjas-run operation is likely to cost millions, he said, and other groups are fundraising to help pay for it.
And as a bonus, though it hasn't recieved nearly the same amount of attention, they're also recounting the Senate race won by Mark Kelly, so they could undo the Senate tie and grant the GQP their Senate majority. The job they were hired for was to conduct a fake audit then declare Trump to be the rightful president. They could have done that without even needing the ballots or voting machines present, let alone bolloxing them up in the process. It's so goddam easy even Eric Trump could do it. So when it comes to scamming their clients, these bozos can't even do that properly. The job they were hired for was to conduct a fake audit then declare Trump to be the rightful president. OK, but now replace simple arithmetic equations with policies that can help or harm real people in the real world.Again if I could force one core concept into the minds of everyone it's that someone who is scared that if people who think 2+2=4 get into power it will be harder to think 2+2=5 and people scared that if people who think 2+2=5 get into power it will be harder to think 2+2=4... are not equally paranoid.
Again that whole pesky "facts" thing.
