Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 27

This is yet another example of a trend I don't like. How many times did we hear over the past four years that, "Trump is in big trouble now." or similar such phrases. And, yet, here we are 100+ days since he was shown the door and he's still living the life of luxury in Florida. No indictments. No demands to testify, no grand juries being empaneled, no charges by the IRS for tax evasion, etc. I thought the Orange Goo was going to be in very hot water in very short order.

Apparently not. I'm not at all happy about that.

Remember those Last Week Tonight "We got him" segments by John Oliver? While being immensely funny, they were also quite disheartening.

It was the Repubs that blocked it though.
They can't block everything.

At a certain point if you spend all your time as voice of reason within an organization you need to start questioning why you are in the organization.

In a word, infrastructure. The current parties, both Democratic and Republican, are far too entrenched in the US system of government, as this later post demonstrates:

It came after the commission, split evenly between Democrats and Republicans, became deadlocked 2-2 on taking action at a closed-door meeting in February.

Two random Republicans were able to derail a major investigation, even though they do not form the government, just because of where they got assigned as part of their committee assignments, and the built in "bipartisan" nature of the system. That's a huge amount of real power for people who lost the damn election.

Cheney giving up on the GOP and trying to form a new party runs into the problem that this new party has no access to anything the GOP currently controls, which is a pretty big limiting factor in how much influence the new party can have.

As Trump himself has shown, it's much easier to take over an existing party structure than to create a new one. Cheney's coming into this game a bit late though, and so is at a big disadvantage.

Well, with luck, she CAN bleed the GOP of a nice chunk of votes. ;)

IMO she won't. The GOP are pretty loyal.

Yeah, I'm extremely doubtful, too.

In other news rather related to the Trump Administration...

Trump DOJ Secretly Obtained WaPo Reporters’ Phone Records and Tried to Get Email Too

To borrow a short take on this -

Way beyond Nixon at his worst: Trump Justice Department secretly obtained Post reporters’ phone records!

By the way, this was AG Barr doing this in 2020 and was apparently rooted in a leak investigation of 2016 Russian interference reporting.

I, as of today am giving up on irony forever. I learned today that the idiot Kushner boy is starting a think tank. Wouldn't the boy have had to have a thought of his own at some point for this?

Not necessarily, that leaves the 'tank' empty so as to be filled with the more respected thoughts of others.

This will be a total day care for the kids who eat paste.

Why change what has worked for him since he started eating paste?

Guys, Cheney is UTTERLY loyal to the Republican Party. She's more conservative than Trump ever thought of being. She just isn't loyal to Trump personally.

The Republican Party is 100% about Trump. It is no longer a conservative party. It is entirely about Trump and Trump only. If you don’t support Trump personally, you are not utterly loyal to the Republican Party. They made it clear in their convention when they decided they had no agenda. And since January 6, everything the party has done is about bowing to their lord and savior Trump.

Ya, I get that. But same applies to others no doubt. If she runs for anyting, she will collect votes, which are then lost to the T**** group.

Also .. she is obviously not utterly loyal, since that seems to imply being true to T****.

And it's all perception nowadays.
I went looking for records of her popularity at home thanks to T's recent flurry of blather against her... couldn't find it through all the stories of how much Wyoming folk hate her now.
WTF .. she's been re-elected as your sole House Rep, she can't have been all that bad for the conservative state
Nope, doesn't matter... OrangeMan say "bad", then she bad. [emoji52]

I don't know why Cheney doesn't employ current GOP policy and procedure. When they vote to remove her, claim everything was rigged against her, ignore the vote, and stay camped in her seat until everyone gives in and lets her keep her job.

Same reason in Virginia they're not following their own voter identification requirements for their primary. Because their own rules, playbook, tactics, whatever, just don't apply to them.

'A lot of confusion': Virginia Republicans stumble over their own voter ID requirement

I loved this bit-
Firebrand state Sen. Amanda Chase, a candidate for governor who has described herself as “Trump in heels” and been disavowed by leaders of her own party for comments they called “idiotic,” told supporters not to trust the process.

"DO NOT TRUST THE PARTY TO DELIVER ACCURATE RESULTS,” she wrote in a fundraising email to supporters. “Who should you go to for the proper results? Me and my campaign! My campaign will be monitoring the voting and data entry on election night. If they are accurate, we will tell you. If they are not, I will be prepared to sue in court to force a public count.”
She has indeed learned well from the master- like Trump, whose only evidence that the election he lost was fraudulent was that he lost it, she's prepared to contest the accuracy of the results on, apparently, no other ground than that she comes up short (surely she's not saying she'll sue to demand a public count, and presumably more "proper result," if she wins?).

And if she wins, some other candidates should sue for a recount. Either way, it's a ***********.

IMO she won't. The GOP are pretty loyal.

You're right but suppose that she only peels off 10% of registered Republicans. Given how evenly divided we appear to be, that could be a decisive difference in a lot of elections. Add in those non-Republicans who conservative but not outright loons and you just might have a major political shift.

That said, I think her efforts are destined to fail.

IMO she won't. The GOP are pretty loyal.

I doubt her success as well.

But the key question that you post raises is what is the GOP?
Is it whatever #45 says it is or is it what it was back in 2015? Some might feel a loyalty to the later.
