"Britain had been shipping convicts to America for decades before they started sending them to Australia. In fact, it was precisely because of America’s fight for independence that the Brits had to start sending their criminals to Australia. But from 1718 until 1775, convict transportation to the American colonies flourished. Some estimates claim that almost 10 percent of migrants to America during this time were British convicts."

Nice if we could get some opinions on guns which don't come from the extremes..those who want no restrictions on guns and those who want to ban all private ownership of guns.

Gun ownership in the US is Not going to go away. Ever.
Though I feel they should be regulated.
Gun owners:

Should have their weapons registered.
Have their weapons in locked storage when not in use.
If weapons are being transferred, they should be in a secured/locked travel case.
Weapons should be insured against theft/misuse/accidents.

If a weapon is stolen, and subsequently used in a crime, AND it was found it was not properly secured, the owner could be found to be partially liable.

I don't give a damn on what type of firearm it is, but it should be.. strongly frowned upon to be walking around with weapons that cannot be holstered.

I'm with you on the broad strokes. The only part I disagree with is the requirement to have them locked in storage when not in use. I understand the desire, and I agree with the desire to have them be secured so that they're not accessible by children or criminals.

But... as a female of the human species who is home by myself several weeks out of the year... I kind of doubt that any criminal breaking into my house with the intent to do me harm is going to politely stand aside and wait while I unlock the gun safe so I can defend myself.

And that's where I end up hesitant.

Someone brought up the fingerprint based firearms earlier, and I think that those would make a reasonable exception to the requirement that they be locked up.

There are biometric gun safes that are designed to be opened just about as fast as you could open a desk drawer.

But even a gun in a desk drawer won't help you if you can't get to it. If you really think you're in danger of a surprise home invasion, you need better doors and locks, and an alarm system.

- Most gun crimes are committed with guns stolen from legal gun owners.

- Legal gun owners don't want to lock up their guns.

- Most gun crimes are committed with guns stolen from legal gun owners.

People want to leave their gun out because all those murderers are running around with their stolen guns! McFly?

Many people obviously don't lock up their guns since their guns are all over the streets. Evidence suggests that gun owners cannot collectively be responsible with their hobby. My trust in them and my tolerance for all of this wanes every day.

My fantasy solution also happens to be the only solution that will work. Gun owners finally get sick of all the shootings (like the rest of us are) and decide maybe they should find a better hobby. Until that happens nothing will change.

I disagree. Home built firearms have always been a thing, just more so now. The intent was to regulate manufacturers. Manufacturers are defined in the CFR and federal law and they do not include hobbyists.

Nope. The intent was to keep track of guns. You know this. Laws aren’t passed with the intent to be annoying. I look forward to your comments on gun issues whenever there’s some mass murder or whatever, because you’re smart and know what you’re talking about, but I think this is an oops

Why Switzerland? They have a well regulated Army. A rifle is given to you to take home as well as a sealed box of ammunition. Serious jail time will result if the box's seal is broken.

Switzerland stoped giving reservists a sealed box of ammunition a few years ago. Rifles are still kept at home and ammunition is available at ranges for practice.

Yes, to track certain guns; those made by licensed manufacturers since 1938 and all NFA firearms since 1934.

Ah! That explains a LOT! :D

If pop culture has taught me anything, it's that the proper place for a handgun is in the top drawer next to the bed.

And that's the point, isn't it? If a weapon is to be used for self-defence, you don't want to have to spend time getting it from its locked case, then the ammunition from a separate locked case. You want to be able to grab it as quickly as you can.

I am a Leftist, trans woman living in the rural South and a gun owner. Biden's proposed gun control legislation will only help the far right.

An unusually thoughtful take on the issue of gun control. Goes into topics of the arbitrariness of legal distinctions, the boon to far-right recruitment that gun control topics leads to, and how these restrictions impact vulnerable minorities.

I find it curious that this is the unpopular issue that Democrats are willing to burn political capitol on.

Or you could minimize the risk of an armed home invasion by not cooking meth in your kitchen.
