Joe is exaggerating, but I do remember the government buying vehicles that the military had specifically told them they didn't want or need.

That tells you exactly how much they 'care' about the military.

That is a major problem. THe Military to spend a lot of money on stuff they don't want. And it's not just weapons. All branches of the services have bases they would love to close and save money on, but the congress critters whose districts contain the bases won't let them.

One of the big cons during the cold war was the number of tanks the Russians had particularly in the European theater. The US military never failed to point this out. All the while not really caring since the US plan was to counter with helicopters and A-10s.

We've never gone "too deep" and Carter being a Naval Officer didn't.

No one can really know, because the Pentagon cannot even be properly audited.

Has anyone claimed yet that either Biden has orchestrated mass shootings in order to take away guns or that he's hired crisis actors and staged them.

If not they soon will. I would bet £2.50 on it.

Basically, he points out that there's a big difference between deficit and debt, and that some people's predictions of the disaster that would occur if debt went above a certain point have not materialized, in part because low interest rates change the nature of debt.

I really wish you wouldn't do that with me. My father's LST was sunk off Omaha beach on D-day. One of my brothers served in the 101st. My eldest brother was a marine who did two tours in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star and two purple hearts. My father's cousin died manning a machine gun in Germany and was buried there. I was all set to go to Annapolis. Even received a nomination from a US Senator to attend. But I fell in love here in Washington State and didn't want leave her.

Why can't I think the military is overfunded without hating the military? I just believe Eisenhower was right when he warned the country about the military industrial complex.

If you want to argue the military is overfunded, OK, but question is how strong a Military sould the US have? IMHO, given the state of the world, we need a pretty damn strong one. if we can have that for less money, I am all for that.

We have money for enough nuclear weapons to destroy every human being on the planet a thousand times. We have military bases all around the world. Almost every modern western nation has comprehensive healthcare for its citizens. I cannot justify paying as much as we do on the military and not have healthcare. I cannot justify us having so many homeless.

What good is an insanely powerful military when so many people go without? It seems to me we are paying to protect corporate interests all around the world and treating our own citizens like ****.
 
I just realized: no state of the union speech this year. Biden probably figured that an honest assessment of the union would sound like describing a dumpster fire as a result of the Trump years thereby really pissing off the GOP.

I think is was Wilson that started that tradition. Presidents are required to report on the state of the Union, it started as mostly a written report.

And we are obligated by treaty to defend all but about four of those 13, mostly from two of those 13.

Personally, I don't disagree, we spend too much on the military, but what happens if we stop? I think the results of that will be terrible unless some other at least equally responsible actors step up. Europe or the Asian democracies need to before we can realistically pull back with out some fairly dire consequences.

Biden is speaking at the "rest in honor" ceremony at the Capitol for the recently killed Capitol police officer. It's cold to say it, but we've heard the story of his own dead wife and children so often that I wonder if it loses its impact? On the other hand, every death is new to the grieving spouses and families, and when he says "I know how you feel," it's the truth.
