The Biden Presidency

Biden's doing great managing COVID, and he's on track to get the economy rolling with a bit of stumbling caused by ******** like Rand Paul whining about face masks, and a few governors simply declaring their states open for business.

He opened ACA insurance options for an additional time period.

He's begun to mend all the international fences Trump tore down.

Psst, he hasn't cured the immigration crisis yet. All together now Republicans to the tune of the talking-points-memo: complain and complain on every talk show, on news interviews, in the social media....

At last check, it's *almost* a bit funny how many Republicans propagandists are just NOW becoming concerned about the well being of the hopeful immigrants/asylum seekers, after having shown no concern (or actively encouraging harm) for the past 4 years. Almost, but not really. They just deserve scorn and disbelief.

It reminds me of a political cartoon I saw in 2009. President Obama was dressed as Ash, from the Evil Dead franchise, using a chainsaw against a horde of zombies all groaning "Reaganomics". A man was standing in the background shouting "Why haven't you fixed the economy yet?"

Did it happen before or after Republicans started worrying about the debt, years after having a spike in the deficit caused by Trump and the republicans passing their "tax cuts for millionaires" plan.

DISGRACEFUL: @VP Kamala Harris refuses to salute the honor guard at the steps of the aircraft. It is a clear demonstration of her dislike for those in uniform, both law-enforcement and military.

Kamala Harris doesn’t salute members of the military as she gets on Air Force Two, breaking with a customary tradition of respect

Remember when she and Joe Biden tried to sell the lie that *Trump* was the one who didn’t respect the troops?

..... and had she saluted then doubtless they would have got their knickers in a twist about her saluting when she had no right to do so.

Yeah, see the recent discussion about Biden saluting or not. Claim: he's a civilian leader. Objection: Yeah, but he's commander in chief!

But now what's the deal with the VP? Claim: she's a civilian leader. Objection: ?????

Did they salute her?

Not that this isn't a typical GOP tan suit issue, mind you. Oh and how about a flag pin?

The Vice President laughed heartily when asked about visiting the border.

Harris laughs when she's uncomfortable with interview questions. It's like a defense mechanism, to try to make it seem like the interviewer shouldn't even be asking about the topic because it's not a serious question.

This is not a Harris issue, it's a women's issue. Unfortunately, women chuckle or smile when faced with difficult situations. Not all women and not all the time, but it *is* a cultural phenomenon which, as you correctly note, is usually a defense mechanism.

Remember Sally Yates' testimony before congress a couple of years ago? She didn't do that and that fact was widely noted *because* it was so unusual.. She never used any distraction effects to avoid questions.

As an aside, I'm really disappointed that Biden doesn't have her in a top position in his administration. She's impressive.

Please define "unfortunately" in this context. Moreover, what was difficult about that situation? She gets fawning adulation from the press almost exclusively. How was she unprepared for that question? It was asked very gently and the reporter laughed along with her. Was it a difficult situation for the reporter, too? I guess if you're a Kamala Harris groupie rather than a journalist, asking her an uncomfortable question would be a difficult situation. I think, at least subconsciously, she laughed to diffuse tension associated with the topic and to convey that there was no reason for a sense of urgency (I do believe that the various problems at the border may be somewhat overstated by the opponents of the Biden administration). I think you're not giving her enough credit as an experienced, practiced, calculated public speaker or giving enough credit to women in general for their agency and capabilities. I'm not going to say much else about this.

The fact that she also laughed when asked about marijuana legalization tells me it's not nervous laughter but laughter at questions she considers obviously silly.

As a bit of an update, in Georgia, the Republican push to remove any hope of ousting Republicans in a fair vote continues.

Last week, a two-page GOP bill on absentee ballot applications was substituted at the last minute by Republicans with a 93-page omnibus bill that includes dozens of new voting restrictions and reforms. The measure was revealed to Democratic state lawmakers and voting rights advocates just one hour before a committee hearing for it in the state House of Representatives.

Stacey Abrams' Fair Fight Action group described the measure as "A desperate power grab to appease insurrectionists and losing political candidates." The bill, according to Georgia Public Broadcasting, introduced dozens of new restrictions including "including banning people from giving food and water to voters waiting in line, limiting early voting days for larger counties, and adding ID requirements to absentee ballots."

Of special concern, though...

But, she is now far more concerned with a, so far, little noticed provision that would allow the partisan, legislature-appointed State Board of Elections to undermine and even reverse elections results in any county in the state by replacing any bi-partisan County Elections Board with a single person of their choosing, for virtually any reason they like.

One of our longtime go-to sources on Georgia election disasters, MARILYN MARKS of the Coalition on Good Governance, joins us for the first time in the new year to sound the alarm bell on that provision, and a few others which, she warns, are not receiving nearly enough attention from the public.

"It's hard to express the danger of what it is they are trying to do," she tells me, explaining how the State Board of Elections (currently a five-person board, with one Democrat) would "be able to take over any County where they don't like how the County is counting the votes, how the County's election processes work...really with no due process. With just a few minor violations -- which anybody can find with any County -- the State Election Board can come swooping in [and] put their partisan appointee in the place of the public Board. They wipe out the public [County] Board of Elections and put one person in charge."

If that measure had been in place during 2020, she warns, it could have been used to overturn election results in, say, Fulton County (Atlanta) at the whim of partisan on the State Board.

Yup. That's a remarkably easy rule to abuse to rig elections, right there. **** the Georgia GOP.

Anybody watching Biden's live press conference? A few minor stumbles, but articulate, well-informed, compassionate and on-message.
