Cancel culture IRL

I'm talking about you sitting there and pretending that "Cancel Culture" has to have one singular definition that everyone is using equally.
I've literally never done this.

Saying "this is what I mean by X" doesn't logically imply that other people must mean the same thing when using the same word or phrase. We all know that words and phrases carry multiple meanings, and I've taken care to ask what other people intend to convey.

So the phrase used to be meaningful but now it's useless, because we must all defer to aggrieved conservative usage?

What else is there to talk about? Do you want to relitigate "Kroeger Andy" or the scandals of yesteryear forever? If we're not talking about "cancel culture" complaints, as it exists now, there's not much relevancy. And as it exists now, it's almost entirely dominated by unhinged conservatives who get mad they can't queer bash anymore without losing a job.

Stout, while I have you here, I would appreciate your response to this:

Sure.....Passing judgement is something billions of people do multiple times/day all over the world. As a dyed in the wool hardcore social justice warrior I must admit that I probably do if more frequently and more harshly than most.

The "for the rest of us" is just an after the fact add on and part of the general weirdness surround simple ideas in this thread. Ideas like a cancellation must be completed to be considered associated with or part of cancel culture. Or...conservative media is using the term improperly so we must follow their lead.

Hey look, real censorship that conservatives don't mind:

An Iowa jury acquitted a journalist who was pepper-sprayed and arrested by police while covering a protest in a case that critics have derided as an attack on press freedom and an abuse of prosecutorial discretion.

Jury didn't buy the **** that the pigs were shoveling. I'm glad conservatives are fighting the important battles, like protecting Mr. Potato Head, instead of worrying about petty things like cops arresting journalists for doing journalism.

I wouldn’t call anyone a freak. But reality is conservatives have been using it both as a cultural war rallying cry and a way to deflect criticism. I think it’s silly to legitimize their tactics.

Are conservatives responsible for and celebrating Piers Morgan’s current fate?

Lol the piss baby got mad someone talked back and stormed off set. This is your hero?

ETA: What "fate"? The crybaby quit. You'd think someone who spent so many years slinging insults might have a thicker skin.

My hero? I made it clear I hate him. And you avoided my question. It’s crystal clear that evil conservatives are not celebrating his cancellation, but good old lefties.

Yeah, it's cool that he's off the air. What's the problem?

You know who else has been cancelled?

Pepe le Pew.

Next up: Miss Piggy. https://movieweb.com/amp/miss-piggy-canceled-pepe-le-pew/

Careful dude, I got yellow carded for posting that Pepé Le Pew story.

Probably worth consigning the whole Loony Tunes thing to the historical dustbin and coming up with something new. I don't know who watches this stuff in 2021 but my kid wasn't raised on it.

That's a hilarious article, I should get a twitter and join the pile on.

I mean, Ms Piggy's downright gentle compared to the Wilkin's Coffee mascot, so she can stay.

(another example of "cancel culture" being nothing - the new Space Jam is due out in a few months, the creepy skunk was never going to be a significant character - it'd mean far too much animation work to remove him this late. But an NYT columnist [and a black bi dude, at that!] commented on the matter, so the right wing can't just sit tight.)

Are we supposed to feel bad about PePe Le Pew?

His whole thing is that he's an unrelenting sex pest. Not exactly the kind of humor that has aged well.

Maybe they can rework the character, instead of being French he can be a American entertainment executive or politician dangling a promising job in exchange for a blowjob.

Only if you promise they're as tedious as the rest
I can only promise that they'd be on topic.

Are we supposed to feel bad about PePe Le Pew?
It's difficult to imagine what the social harm would be from making kid's cartoons without "sex pest" gags. Is some poor family scraping by on royalties from that one character?

Next thing you know they'll be cancelling Goofus of Goofus & Gallant.

I think all cartoons are in danger.

Fred Flinstone and his pal Barney are in trouble - they're sexist as hell.

I can't think of anything more relevant to cancel culture, so I'm happy with it.

We have a load of Looney Tunes discs that we still watch every now and then.

They're all in trouble, though.

Bugs Bunny - violent as hell
Yosemite Sam - coercion with guns
Daffy Duck - makes fun of people with disabilities, Ditto Porky Pig.

Mickey, Donald & Goofy are next after them.

Are we supposed to feel bad about PePe Le Pew?

No, but it's a further absurdity.

His whole thing is that he's an unrelenting sex pest.

Who gets PWND every time, by the woman.

If you're going to look at it in the context of real world, it empowers the women - they resist his approaches and teach him a lesson.

Fair enough. I don't really want to say my kid, who's now 15 was raised by the electronic babysitter but he spent more time in front of the screen that I care to admit. None of this stuff ever showed up even when he switched to the retro cartoon station that feature older characters.

I can't see cancel culture going after shows like The Backyardigans, The Magic Schoolbus, Sid the Science Kid, but you never know.

Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam are being remade without their guns.

I won't argue with that but after spend a bit of time watching the cartoons on Dailymotion, I'd say he's "not too impressed when the tables are returned".

This whole cartoon cancellation thing is looking like Warner Bros. is angling for some free publicity.

That’s probably a part of it, but I also think people’s values have changed over time. A lot of older entertainment would have content that people wouldn’t be interested in anymore, Looney Toons included.
