Major explosion in downtown Nashville

oooh...that is creepy. Was it counting down? or always saying 15 minutes?

Just heard an interview where the person said it counted down from 30 minutes, but did not go off until about 10 minutes after what would have been zero.

Emergency generators only run for so long. They need to be refueled.
Also, utilities may have had to shut off power to a wider area around the site once it was deemed safe for power crews to do so. And some failures might cascade as traffic is routed around the damaged systems. So, there are a lot of reasons the communication failures to increase and spread out over time.

Yeah. Even if the remains wind up being (one of) the perpetrators, that changes the landscape on this a fair bit.

Just speculation but xmas depression gone seriously wrong?

Somebody lost more than they could tolerate, decided to share the pain with others. Went camping downtown on an all night bender and in the morning said goodbye.

It's possible (at this stage with the information we have damn near anything is possible), but that is one convoluted suicide method.

They would have had more planned out than just camping and saying goodbye cruel world in the morning. But your idea is sound, there's a lot of depression in the world right now.

Let's see, maybe targeted AT&T because they believe in some weird 5G CT. And this AT&T building is close to where they live.

One would think the AT&T building was the target because what else is on this obscure side street if you didn't intend on killing a bunch of people. And that alone pretty much rules out any foreign motivated terrorist.

Or maybe had a grudge against AT&T because of a work related diss. But again, that usually involves killing the people one blames.

Loner is almost certainly going to be the case if this guy blew himself up. (I would say 'themself' but I'm pretty sure we are looking at a male perp here.)

So, depressed, lone nutter, believes in the 5G CT.

Perhaps something was put in the mail and it won't even get delivered for a day or so, intending for it to be after the fact.

Got a hold of my uncle via E-mail. He said the same thing that our resident Nashville locals are saying. It woke him up at 6:30ish and he thought it was a gas explosion at first. No damage to his building, at least. I guess it was about 3 blocks away.

This one is baffling in more ways than one. Why the timing that would minimize casualties? Why the announcement beforehand? Very strange, this one. Should be an interesting follow, however.

Not that strange.

The IRA used to do it a lot.

I don't buy that it was an anti-5G nut. If an anti-5G nut was nutty enough to blow something up over it, they'd blow up an actual 5G tower.

And I don't think it was someone with some kind of "message", because the target wasn't a symbolically important target. I'd lay odds your average person on the street in Nashville probably wasn't aware that the building was an obscure, unmarked AT&T data center. If some general conspiracy theorist or anti-tech psycho wanted to send an actual message, there was a gigantic AT&T corporate building three blocks away that everyone in the city recognizes.

Again we live in a post-fact world where a pizza parlor got shot up to save the children that didn't exist from the secret sex dungeon that didn't exist that was hidden in the basement that didn't exist.

So while I'm not giving that any more likelihood than any of the other (at this point nearly infinite) possibilities we have at this early point with this little data, I'm not giving it any less likelihood either.

And also... people are just weird sometimes and dramatic some other times. Why did Marvin Heemeyer spend months and thousands of dollars building a secret armored weaponized bulldozer when he had a beef with the city council instead of just paying an AR-15 for 500 bucks and shooting up town hall meeting like a normal psycho? *Shrugs* Who the hell knows?

People not only act in violent and stupid ways for no good discernable reasons, they sometimes act in violent, stupid, and breathtakingly inefficient and overly-convoluted ways for no good discernable reason.

We can't even rule out the IRA at this point. :boxedin:

Well for that matter we should mention that the idea AT&T was the "target" of the explosion is something we're all just assuming simply for credulity's sake. While the AT&T building was badly damaged, the businesses and apartments in the townhouses across the street have it far worse. Unlike the data center high-rise, some of those buildings are absolutely going to have to be demolished, if not all of them.

Forgive my ignorance, but is this AT&T thing a cellphone network/streaming/cable thingy like our Vodafone?

To put it lightly.

It goes back a way. How far? Well AT&T stands for American Telephone and Telegraph so you can probably guess.

AT&T is a massive American telecoms company. They own/control huge chunks of landline, cell phone, broadband, and other telecom infrastructure.

(This is the tip of the iceberg. AT&T is even now the largest telecom company in the world, and this is after suffering one of the largest anti-monopoly breakups in history back in the 1980s. It was founded by Alexander Graham Bell. It currently also owns Warner Brothers, CNN, HBO and... well pretty much everything that Disney doesn't.)

Lots of factors we do not know. In my opinion speculation into details on motive in the oddities of this one is too difficult.

One thing that is sure is a lot of military vets with battle experience could do what happened. A lot of them fall on hard times leaving the military as changing back to civilian life isn't always easy. They don't always know how to adapt to a non structured life. It wasn't too hard for me as I never fit military society well.

But, I do not know it was a vet or some guy that failed as a mall Santa Claus. I have no idea at all whom or why. This is an odd one for domestic bombing.

Read a link a wee while ago that some cops caught onto it and evacuated people after hearing a womens voice coming from the RV.

Will try to find it again

Sorry here is one of them

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/explosion-downtown-nashville-b1778909.html

The officers moved to evacuate the nearby apartment buildings and clear people from the streets.

Mr Aaron said officers went door-to-door before the explosion to evacuate residents who lived close to where the RV was parked. In the moments prior to the explosion, a woman’s voice calling for anyone who could hear the message to evacuate was played over loudspeakers in the area immediately around the RV.
Officers also apparently turned away a man who was walking his dog toward the RV just before it exploded.
