Okay, what causes chest congestion? For days now, I have had this ...well, not really a "cough". More of a constantly clearing my throat. Occasionally it is productive, but more often it isn't. (it's much more effective at annoying my wife, but that's another problem.) My nose is a little runny, but not much. I have no fever and I don't ache.

What's going on here and how do I get it to stop?

If you were my patient I might check a fecal exam to see if you have hookworms since it can cause a cough or run a heartworm test to see if you might have contracted heartworm. I am a veterinarian so not really an expert on humans however what it sounds like is a sinus problem. Drainage from the sinuses pours down the back of the throat causing the clearing of the throat and coughing and some comes out the front side through the nose. There could be mechanical irritation (as in dust), allergy (as in hay fever), or infectious (viral/bacterial) causes. I am not sure what would be most likely but suspect if you have no allergies and have not been in a very dusty place then viral is likely. Again I am not a human doctor.

You scrape barnacles off your bottom as you move into winter....?

Rolfe.
Among other hangers-on...;)

ETA: The motion referring to the apparent tilting of the northern hemisphere away from the sun ( I know it doesn't tilt, but it was the image I had...)

Try drinking more water. As we careen ever slowly into the winter, houses heat up and humidity drops. This could thicken your mucous (the part of your body in contact with dry air) by a little, preventing it from sliding as it should.

We're moving into winter?

OK I'd better go out for a walk before it gets here.

Could be asthma. Sometimes, the only thing that happens to me during an attack is a constant need to clear my throat.

What dogdoctor said. Drainage from your sinuses down the back of your throat. Sinuses are producing a little extra phlegm due to dryer conditions. Drink more water and if it really bothers you talk to your doc about some antihistamines or otc sinus meds.

You've somehow done something to make God angry with you.

(sorry, been spending too much time with the fundies on the hannity.com forums)

This reminds me of the time I woke up at two in the morning hacking up phlegm. Every inhale was accompanied by that horrible wheezing sound, and could draw in so little air that I felt like I was drowning.

What I did was to get out of bed and hold myself upside down in various positions for a few hours. Somehow I was able to breath much easier during that period, and by the end of that time I felt comfortable enough to go back to bed and sleep.

Of course I don't think you should invest in hand-shoes upchurch, just making idle conversation. ;)

Air conditioning or central heating? Going into and out of the cold?
