Trump's Coup d'état.

I'm sure this is more symbolic than anything else but there's this:

That bit about "lawsuits seeking to obliterate public confidence in our democratic system by invalidating the clear results of the 2020 presidential election " is especially on point to me. If I hear one more Repubby spout that pious, self-serving crap that "this is just about making sure the people can have confidence in the integrity of our electoral process," I'm going to puke. Seriously- these are the people impugning, without evidence sufficient to get any favorable court rulings, even by Trump-appointed judges, an election Biden won; they're joining in a suit in which Texas assumes a right to dictate how other states run their elections, because Texas doesn't like the way those other states made adjustments in their processes for the pandemic, even though Texas itself made some adjustments (as well as some other states not being sued by Texas, which, purely coincidentally I'm sure, voted the same way as Texas); and they're helping to set a precedent by which any future election can be invalidated by any state on the losing end of it which doesn't like the way some other state(s) on the winning end held theirs.

Yeah- that'll restore confidence in our electoral process.

Until we somehow drag our entire society kicking and screaming out of a post-facts world this is all mental masturbation pretty much.

If facts don't matter and the Republicans stay in their bubbles everything done to safeguard the Democratic Process from the Republicans will look exactly like (or play into the narrative) the Democrats trying to cheat the Republicans.

This is why facts have to matter. Because without facts all of our good qualities can be used against us.

Without a shared reality everything good just starts to eat itself.

They could also just ignore it. It's Friday. All 50 States and DC have certified their electoral slate of voters. The EC convenes on MONDAY.

I don't think they will ignore it, nor do I think they should. This should be laid to rest before Monday.

I understand that.

It's Friday 4:50 PM DC time. If they don't post a ruling in the next 10 to 70 minutes, do you really think one is coming? That said, there may be law clerks hard at work this very moment drafting something.

It's kind of encouraging that some 40 percent of House Republicans are not joining this suit. I wonder if it's a matter of principle for any of them or just down to election math in their districts.

Ha. Who am I kidding.

No senators have joined, right? Those guys need to win statewide races which might have a moderating effect.

One of our Senators did.

The more I think about it the more I'm convinced that SCOTUS should either do nothing or issue a terse denial like they did on the PA case.

By not responding the court is saying our leaders are not decided in courtrooms.

Or schedule it to be heard 1st April 2021...

Or rather on the floor in agony holding their sides ... as they read parts of the Texas filing out loud to each other. They may end up laughing themselves to death.

I was hoping for the terse denial.

Unfortunately, an adult in authority needs to step up and call BS on Trump’s nonsense. Obviously Mitch isn’t going to, McCarthy is backing the idiotic suit, which means that the only option is for the SCOTUS to deliver a serious rebuke. Nothing else will stop the insanity, and nothing else will have any hope of getting the Trumpers to start to accept the facts. (And yes, I know that probably won’t happen as long as Trump has access to Twitter.)

I understand. But interestingly, this demonstrates Trump's impotence. By do nothing SCOTUS elevates the court over politics. You all ramble on while we follow the law.

It's 6:00 PM FRIDAY in DC and it's crickets.

Didn't see that at www.foxnews.com. Got a link?

I didn't see it on Fox either. CNN has a very short blurb.

Two conservative justices — Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas — said they believed the Supreme Court was technically required to allow Texas to file a bill of complaint, but indicated that they would “not grant other relief,” meaning they would not agree to throw the country into chaos.
