Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 26

Something that seems to have been overlooked, in all the covid and election related news...

From: CNN
The US on Sunday formally exited the decades-old Open Skies Treaty, some six months after President Donald Trump first announced the decision, according to the State Department. The 1992 treaty allows the 34 member countries to conduct short notice, unarmed, reconnaissance flights over the other countries to collect data on their military forces and activities.
...
America's European allies, however, value the treaty, as it gives them the ability to collect aerial reconnaissance information that they would not necessarily have access to outside of the treaty.

Not only that, they are currently scrapping the planes after having cut off the funding for the scheduled replacement aircraft some time ago.

ETA:

Trump administration to reportedly dispose of Open Skies treaty planes

Making a big deal out of the stock market hitting a record high the day after you concede your reelection contest is a remarkable self-own

Of course. Got to make it harder for Biden to reverse.

And, based on Marco Rubio's apparent intent (The Hill article), the GOP has decided that even though Donald Trump lost the election, they have a right to demand that his Presidency continue:

In a tweet Tuesday morning, the Florida Republican suggested that the president-elect's nominees "went to Ivy League schools, have strong resumes, attend all the right conferences & will be polite & orderly caretakers of America’s decline."

"I support American greatness," the senator continued, adding: "And I have no interest in returning to the 'normal' that left us dependent on China."

What's really kind of delicious about this is that the same day the stock market hits over 30,000 for the first time ever, a candidate for President also went over 80,000,000 votes for the first time ever. Trump would love to take credit for the first number, which may actually have more to do with him losing than anything else he's ever done as President, while he definitely deserves credit for that second number, which has more to do with what he's done as President than just being a normal loser.

Trump has to kiss and make up quick with Putin: his presidency has been a huge disappointment for the Kremlin.

How so? Sure, there are some disappointments, like Trump not getting his way and directly lifting sanctions at the start, but mostly, it's been win after win after win for Putin (in ways that are losses for the US, generally) delivered by Trump.

He has tried, but not really managed.

He never got rid of a number of sanctions, and just now instituted new sanctions on the Nordstrom project.

He got Texans... TEXANS!... to wear "Better RED than DEM" t-shirts. [emoji15]
Don't tell me that didn't give Vlad a semi. [emoji53]

yeah, but what can Vlad buy himself for that?
He is mostly interested in increasing and safeguarding his personal wealth offshore.
Sanctions make that harder.

Donald Trump’s decision to allow the presidential transition to begin after weeks of delay boosted sentiment across trading desks - Financial Times
Trump claims it as a win for his administration.

Which I guess it was, but not in the way he thinks.

It’s more like the bids at a bachelor auction hitting record heights only after Trump has left the podium.
